Ghent (Gent in Dutch) is the great medieval city of Flanders that escapes the mass tourism that swamps nearby Bruges. Split by the Lys (Leie) and Scheldt rivers, it had its golden age as a textile powerhouse, and that past shows in the guild houses of the Graslei, the Counts' castle right downtown and the belfry tower. It's also a university city: young, bike-friendly and famously a pioneer of vegetarian eating. It's walkable end to end, has trams and a real student nightlife.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gante? How much do you need per month in Gante?
Ghent works beautifully if you want a small, gorgeous, nearly car-free city where you can work in peace, bike everywhere, and have Brussels 30 minutes away by train. It works badly if you came looking for cheap or for sun: Belgium is expensive (rent almost always comes without utilities, and winter heating bites) and the weather is grey and drizzly for much of the year. And the thing nobody mentions: Belgium has no digital nomad visa, so for most non-Europeans this is a 90-day base, not a one-year plan.

Stable and fast, but mind the myth: Belgium has excellent coverage and rock-solid power (no blackouts, no scheduled cuts), yet it came late to fiber — the country has spent years near the bottom of Europe for FTTH penetration and a large share of homes still runs on coax cable (Telenet). Proximus is rolling out fiber in Ghent, but street by street: check the specific address before signing, don't assume. Home plans typically run ≈100 Mbps to 1 Gbps down, plenty for anything; the real catch is upload on coax, which can be far below the download speed — if you live on video calls or push big files, ask about upload explicitly. 4G/5G coverage is citywide. What hurts is the price: internet and mobile in Belgium are among the most expensive in Western Europe, and getting your own line usually requires a Belgian address and bank account (SIMs are registered with ID), so for short stays rent a place that already includes internet.
CoworkingCoworking
Ghent has a real scene, not a decorative one: it's a serious university city (Ghent University, tens of thousands of students) with a startup and tech ecosystem around it, so coworking spaces are spread between the center and the converted industrial buildings. A monthly flex desk runs ≈US$150–250 and a private office considerably more; I won't name places because the lineup turns over fast — go sit there for a day before paying a full month, nearly all of them let you try. The city's most beloved free option does have a name: De Krook, the modern public library by the water, with huge tables, wifi and people working all day. It fills up during exam season, but it's genuinely good. Cafés are a half-option: many here aren't laptop places and some say so outright, so don't show up assuming you can camp for four hours on one coffee.
Center and Patershol — the prettiest part of Belgium, everything on foot, essentially car-free; also the priciest and the loudest on weekends, since Patershol is the restaurant-and-bar quarter. Sint-Pieters and the Miljoenenkwartier — around the main station (Gent-Sint-Pieters): greener, quieter, grand old buildings, and a direct train to Brussels in ~30 minutes; the classic pick for remote workers who want calm. Ledeberg and Gentbrugge — southeast, past the water and the ring road: same money, a lot more square meters, 10-15 minutes by bike to the center; where people move when the center prices them out. Dampoort and Sint-Amandsberg — cheaper, very diverse, superbly connected by train and bike; less postcard and more bustle, but it works. And one piece of reverse advice: don't live on Overpoortstraat, the student party street — the midweek noise is real.
ComunidadCommunity
Easy at the surface, slower underneath. Almost everyone speaks English and speaks it well — Flanders is near the top of Europe for that — so you can live, work and go out without a word of Dutch. And because it's a student city with a constant flow of Erasmus students (plenty of Spaniards and Latin Americans among them), there's always someone new and something on: bars, cycling, sports, university events, markets. What's harder is breaking into actual Flemish circles: friendships here were formed at school, and people are friendly but don't open up fast; Dutch helps enormously with that, and you'll need it anyway for paperwork, leases and city-hall business, which runs in Dutch. The Spanish-speaking community exists but is small and fairly student-heavy; for bigger expat events people just take the train to Brussels, half an hour away. And summer flips a switch: the city lives outdoors and meeting people gets infinitely easier than in January.
No traigas coche. The visa is the problem, not the price. Belgium is one of the few Western European countries with NO digital nomad visa. If you're not an EU citizen, what you have is Schengen: 90 days in any 180-day window. Staying longer requires a real route (work, study, the self-employed professional card) and it is not a quick formality. And if you stay and register with the city, you enter the Belgian tax net — among the heaviest in the world on employment income; get advice BEFORE, not after. The weather. It's not extreme cold, it's grey: drizzle for much of the year, and in December it's dark shortly before five in the afternoon. Plenty of people get flattened by their second winter; if you're coming from the tropics, do a trial winter before committing to a year. Renting. The standard residential lease in Flanders is long-term (nine years, or a "short" one of up to three), short-stay furnished places are scarce and marked up, and you can be asked for up to three months' deposit in a blocked account. August and September are a brutal bottleneck because every student arrives at once: hunt outside that window. Utilities are billed separately and the old center houses are poorly insulated — the January heating bill is a shock. Bikes get stolen, constantly. It's Ghent's everyday crime: good lock, chained to something fixed, and don't leave the nice bike on the street overnight. Otherwise it's a city you can walk at any hour. Don't bring a car. The center has one of Europe's largest pedestrian and restricted-traffic zones, and the circulation plan sends you on absurd detours just to cross from one side to the other; here you live on a bike, full stop. July: the Gentse Feesten. Ten days of festival taking over the whole center — a blast if you're visiting, unlivable if you have to work and you sleep there.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
