Packed with Hindu temples and sacred tanks, it's a centuries-old pilgrimage centre, famous for the Mahamaham festival that draws crowds to the great tank every twelve years. It's also known for its "degree coffee," South India's filter coffee, and for its brass and bronze vessel craft. Around it lie gems of Chola art: the Airavatesvara temple at Darasuram, a World Heritage Site, and the great temples of Thanjavur a short drive away.
