It's home to the University of Tennessee and its fervour for the Volunteers, and the gateway to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited in the United States. It hosted the 1982 World's Fair, which left it the golden Sunsphere that dominates the skyline. A walkable centre, a roots music scene and mountains half an hour away: better than its reputation suggests.
