It was capital of the old princely state of Nawanagar and keeps that city-state air, with artificial lakes and palaces at its center. Today it's known for two very different things: it's India's "brass city," with thousands of workshops making bronze parts, and on its outskirts sits the world's largest oil refinery complex, run by Reliance. It's also a home of bandhani, the Gujarati tie-dye. Hot, dry and hardworking.
