Indore

Indore is the largest city in Madhya Pradesh, in the heart of India, and it's genuinely known for two things: it's ranked India's cleanest city year after year under the Swachh Bharat surveys, and it's a food capital obsessed with street eating. It was the seat of the Maratha Holkar dynasty, whose Rajwada palace still presides over the old town. Today it blends that past with elite institutes (IIT and IIM Indore) and a thriving commercial buzz, sitting around 550 m up on the Malwa plateau.

Mejor épocaBest time

October to March, dry and mild thanks to the Malwa plateau's elevation. The monsoon (July–September) cools things but soaks; April–June turns fiercely hot.

PresupuestoBudget

Cheap even by Indian standards. Street eating is superb and costs little; a backpacker gets by comfortably for less than in the coastal metros.

EntradaEntry

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Indore? How much do you need per month in Indore?

Indore is one of the cheapest bases you'll find that still has decent internet: ≈US$900 a month buys a comfortable life and ≈US$400 gets you by if you share or take a PG room. The real cost isn't money, it's isolation — there is no nomad scene here, you'll barely see other foreigners, and daily life runs in Hindi. It works if you're coming for a job with an Indian company, for study, or for family and you want to stretch every dollar; it doesn't work if you want a ready-made remote community or an easy legal way to stay.

Home fiber at 100-300 Mbps runs ≈US$9-13 a month from the big carriers (Jio, Airtel) plus some local ISPs, and it gets installed within a few days in Vijay Nagar, the Schemes and the Super Corridor. In older buildings downtown the wiring is more improvised and real speeds drop. It handles video calls fine; upload depends on the plan (some are symmetric, some aren't), so ask and test it before committing to heavy meetings. Mobile is your real insurance: 4G/5G covers the whole city with near-unlimited data for ≈US$4-5 a month, so a hotspot bails you out of any outage. Power cuts do happen, mostly during monsoon storms, lasting minutes to a couple of hours; ask whether the building has an inverter or generator before signing, because without one your router goes down with the lights. Two India-wide things: sites and apps do get blocked from time to time by government order, and local data-logging rules pushed several VPN providers to shut down their servers inside the country — they still work, you just connect to servers abroad.

CoworkingCoworking

There is a coworking scene, but it's local and startup-driven, not nomad-driven: scattered spaces in Vijay Nagar, the Schemes and near the Super Corridor, where the IT offices are. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$45-90 and a small private office ≈US$120-220, with plenty of variation. I won't name places because they open and close fast here: find them once you're on the ground, visit in person and test the wifi before paying for a month. Plenty of remote workers here just work from home or from Vijay Nagar cafés, which have decent wifi but fill up with students in the afternoon.

Vijay Nagar is the obvious bet: the modern side of the city, with malls, cafés, gyms and the furnished flats that actually get rented to outsiders. Scheme 54 and Scheme 78, right next door, are the quieter, more residential version of the same thing. The Super Corridor is where people arriving for IT jobs land: new buildings, lower prices, but far from everything and still half-empty at night. Old Palasia and New Palasia are the long-standing central area — livelier, better street food, in exchange for older buildings and more noise. The old town around Rajwada is essential for eating and wandering, but not for living.

ComunidadCommunity

There are very few foreigners, and the ones you'll see are usually passing through for a multinational office or the universities. Note on that last one: both IIT Indore and IIM Indore sit outside the city on their own campuses, so their crowd spills into town less than you'd expect. Spanish-speaking community: zero — don't count on finding anyone who speaks Spanish. What does exist is a young, fairly active tech scene around the IT offices, with developer meetups and startup events. People from Indore have a deserved reputation for being warm and inviting you along quickly, so meeting locals is easy; what's hard is finding anyone in your same situation. Daily life happens in Hindi: English works fine in offices, universities and with younger people, but with landlords, autorickshaw drivers and at the market you'll regret not knowing a hundred words of Hindi. Also be ready to be the odd one out on your street: stares, selfies and questions, all without bad intent.

The legal gap is the serious one: India has no digital nomad visa, and a tourist e-visa lets you neither work nor stay long. For a stay of months you need an actual employment or business visa, and whoever houses you is required to report you to immigration with Form C — plenty of small landlords don't know how and simply won't rent to foreigners. Leases are typically 11 months, with one to three months' deposit, and in many cases you'll be asked for police verification of the tenant. Weather is the second hit: April to June runs 38-42 °C and you can't work without AC, which spikes the electricity bill; July to September the monsoon floods streets and makes getting around a chore. Indore is among India's cleanest and safest cities and that isn't marketing, but winter air gets hazy and two-wheeler traffic is chaotic — if you've never driven in India, don't start here. Two things that surprise people: it's a heavily vegetarian city with a low-key drinking culture — legal, but if you were expecting a bar scene, this isn't it — and the airport is almost entirely domestic, so any international flight means connecting through Delhi or Mumbai.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
