It was the capital of the Timurid Empire in the 15th century and keeps some of the region's most refined Islamic architecture: the tile-clad Friday Mosque, a commanding citadel and the minarets of the Musalla complex. Today, under Taliban control and with 'do not travel' warnings from most governments, it's a hard stop for safety reasons, not a normal tourist destination.
