A thousand years ago it was the capital of the Ghaznavid Empire, a seat of power and Islamic culture whose remains—minarets, citadel and mausoleums—still mark the city. It has an extreme climate, with bitterly cold winters and dry summers. Today it is not a travel destination: much of Afghanistan carries do-not-travel advisories for safety.
