Des Moines

Aprox. 210,330 habitantesApprox. 210,330 people

Des Moines is the capital of Iowa, deep in the agricultural American Midwest, where the Des Moines and Raccoon rivers meet. It's an insurance-and-state-government city that has earned a reputation for being surprisingly livable: low cost of living, a revitalized downtown and a cultural scene above its size. The skyline is dominated by the state capitol with its great gold dome. It has the Midwest's extreme continental climate: hot humid summers, cold snowy winters. Every August it hosts one of the country's most famous state fairs.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Des Moines? How much do you need per month in Des Moines?

Des Moines is one of the cheapest, most functional state capitals in the US: plenty of internet, an orderly city, and rents that Chicago, Denver or Austin stopped offering years ago. It works if your priority is saving while you earn in dollars, if being near the insurance and fintech ecosystem that holds the city up is useful to you, and if a real winter doesn't scare you. It doesn't work if you're after a nomad scene — there isn't one — or if you want to live without a car: public transport is weak and the city is built for driving.

The strongest part of the package. Mediacom is the dominant cable provider in Iowa and reaches nearly the whole metro with plans from a few hundred megs up to gigabit; CenturyLink/Lumen is the other long-standing option, with fiber in parts of the city. Google Fiber came into the area building over West Des Moines' municipal conduit network, so if your address falls there you get genuinely symmetric fiber. Watch the difference: cable gives you fast download but weak upload (bad news for heavy video calls or big file uploads); fiber is symmetric. Coverage varies block by block, so before signing a lease, plug the exact address into the provider's site. Mobile: Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile all cover the metro well on 5G. Outages aren't routine, but severe spring and summer storms — and the August 2020 derecho — did knock out power across parts of Iowa for hours or days. A battery bank for your router isn't paranoid.

CoworkingCoworking

Small but real, and it doesn't revolve around nomads — it revolves around the local insurance, fintech and startup ecosystem (Principal, Nationwide and friends employ half the city). Gravitate is the name that keeps coming up, with space downtown and in West Des Moines. Budget ≈US$150–250/month for a hot desk and considerably more for a dedicated desk or private office — confirm rates with them directly, they move. Plenty of people just work from the downtown Central Library (the low glass building by Western Gateway Park, good wifi and rooms) or from cafés. One practical, very local detail: the downtown skywalk is several kilometres of enclosed walkways linking buildings, so if your building is connected, in January you can go from your apartment to the office without stepping outside.

East Village: the most walkable, most \"city\" part of Des Moines — bars, cafés, restaurants, new apartment buildings, at the foot of the Capitol and just across the river from downtown. It's where almost everyone arriving from elsewhere ends up if they want to avoid depending on a car. Sherman Hill: restored Victorian houses next to downtown, quieter, good charm-per-dollar. The Ingersoll Avenue / Grand Avenue corridor: the city's restaurant row, apartments on both sides, everything within walking distance. And West Des Moines, a separate city to the west: a genuine suburb, built for driving, but with Valley Junction (a historic shopping street with a market) and home to a good share of the people who came for corporate jobs. Separate note: the largest immigrant communities — Latino, Bosnian, Southeast Asian — live mostly on the east and north sides, not downtown.

ComunidadCommunity

There's no nomad community here. No nomad meetups, no cafés full of laptops belonging to people passing through, none of the coliving circuit you'd find in Medellín or Lisbon. What there is instead is a city with genuinely international residents: Iowa has been resettling refugees since the 1970s (the Tai Dam and Vietnamese communities were among the first, under Governor Robert Ray; then Bosnians in the nineties, more recently Burmese and African communities), and the metro's Latino population is large and visible — businesses, taquerías and churches especially on the east side, plus an annual Latino Heritage Festival downtown. Spanish gets you through daily life in several areas, though the city runs in English. On making friends: Midwesterners are warm on first contact but their social circles were set in high school, so easy small talk doesn't turn into friendship by itself — you have to show up to the same thing repeatedly. The Saturday downtown farmers market (huge, one of the best in the country, but seasonal: May through October) and the tech/startup events are the two most obvious ways in.

Three heavy things before you book anything. One: the US has no digital nomad visa, full stop. Entering on ESTA or a tourist visa gives you up to 90 days (or whatever they stamp), you can't work for a US company, and working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey zone the border officer interprets as they see fit — don't improvise, and don't lie at the border. Two: winter is real. December through February highs sit at or below freezing and cold snaps drop past −20 °C with wind on top; summer flips to the other extreme, around 30 °C with heavy humidity, and spring brings genuine tornado and severe-storm season (find your building's basement or shelter on day one). Three: the car. DART, the bus system, exists and covers some downtown trips, but routes thin out at night and on weekends; without a car you'll feel stuck. Add that the standard lease here is 12 months with a credit check, and you have no US credit history if you've just arrived — expect to fight over large deposits or the scarcity of furnished sublets. And budget for real health insurance (it is not included in the figures above): in the US, an emergency without coverage is a five-figure number, not just a bad day. On safety, the city is calm by American standards, with rougher pockets on parts of the east and south sides — nothing basic common sense doesn't handle.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
