Denpasar is Bali's capital and largest city: the island's administrative, commercial and transport centre, not the postcard Bali of rice terraces and beaches. It's an urban, chaotic and authentically Balinese place, with temples amid the traffic, busy markets and the islanders' real life away from the tourist circuit of Kuta, Seminyak or Ubud. Still, it's where almost everyone arrives —the airport is just outside— and it's worth a look for its markets, museums and the feel of a genuine Balinese-Hindu city.
Mejor épocaBest time
April to October, the dry season, with less rain and humidity. The wet season (November-March) brings strong but brief tropical downpours. It's hot year-round, being near the equator.
PresupuestoBudget
Bali is among Southeast Asia's most affordable spots and Denpasar cheaper than the tourist areas. Local food (nasi campur, babi guling) for very little; a nomad manages on 800-1,200 USD/month.

The norm is renting a scooter or using apps like Gojek and Grab (bike or car). Public transport is scarce; Denpasar's traffic is heavy, so a bike is usually the nimblest option.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Denpasar? How much do you need per month in Denpasar?
Careful with the name: Denpasar is the administrative capital, but almost no nomads actually live there — remote life happens in Canggu, Ubud, Sanur and the Bukit, all 30-60 minutes away by scooter. Bali works brilliantly if you want instant community, cheap food, ocean and a social life you don't have to build from scratch; it works badly if traffic wears you down, if you need corporate-grade internet with no plan B, or if you're expecting prices from ten years ago (they're gone — the nomad areas got expensive, though Denpasar and the local neighbourhoods are still cheap). It's also not for you if you won't ride a scooter, because there's no useful public transport.

Home fiber (Biznet, IndiHome and MyRepublic are the names you'll see) typically runs on the order of ≈20-100 Mbps down — fine for video calls — but upload is much lower, and in villa complexes the wifi is shared across units, so at 8pm it can halve. Before signing any lease, run your own speed test in the room you'll actually work in, not at reception. PLN power cuts happen and are more common in the rainy season, so if you live on calls keep mobile data as backup. Telkomsel's 4G is solid across most of the island and is the best plan B (5G is limited to a few pockets). And the thing that catches everyone out: on Nyepi, Balinese new year (March, date varies), the island shuts down for 24 hours and in recent years the authorities have switched off mobile data island-wide. Don't schedule deliverables that day, and check the exact date for the current year.
CoworkingCoworking
Bali has one of the most mature coworking scenes anywhere, not just a couple of cafés with wifi. In Canggu the long-standing names are Dojo Bali (right by Batu Bolong beach), Tropical Nomad and BWork; in Ubud, Outpost. Check they're still open and at the same address before you move — the scene turns over fast and spaces open and close every year. Monthly hot-desk memberships run ≈US$150-250 and most include events, call booths and a genuinely active social scene. You can also work from cafés all day for the price of a coffee, but café wifi is a lottery and at peak hours you won't find a plug. If your job is calls, pay for the coworking — the soundproof booth is worth every dollar.
Canggu (Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan) is the nomad epicentre: coworkings, gyms, surf and the highest density of people like you — in exchange for brutal traffic and prices that are no longer "cheap". Pererenan is the slightly quieter version and where people are drifting. Ubud, inland, is greener, slower and cheaper, drawing the yoga and wellness crowd and anyone who wants to actually focus: no beach, and very humid. Sanur, on the east coast next to Denpasar, is the calm option — flat sea, families, an older crowd, easy airport and hospital access, far less noise. Uluwatu and the rest of the Bukit, down south, are surf and cliffs but very spread out: without a scooter you don't exist there, and water supply problems recur in the dry season. Denpasar itself is the real Indonesian city — cheap and practical, with the hospitals, paperwork and markets — but almost no foreigner lives there by choice.
ComunidadCommunity
It's one of the easiest places on earth to meet people: in Canggu or Ubud you'll have something on most nights within a week without trying — coworking events, run clubs, surf lessons, community dinners, WhatsApp and Facebook groups for everything. The everyday language among foreigners is English, and it's widely spoken in the tourist areas; Bahasa Indonesia is easy to start and 50 words genuinely changes how locals treat you. There's a Spanish-speaking community (a fair few Argentines, Spaniards and Mexicans) but it's a minority and turns over fast. That's the real downside: most people are here 1-3 months, so you make friends fast and lose them just as fast.
Three things before you book the flight. One: the scooter is the real risk, not crime — motorbike accidents are the number one reason a trip here ends badly, and if you ride without a valid motorcycle licence (plus the international permit) your travel insurance probably won't cover you. Helmet always, and if you've never ridden one, Bali is not where you learn. Two: the visa. The usual routes are visa on arrival (30 days, extendable once) or a B211A visit visa for longer stays; Indonesia also created a remote-worker permit (the E33G KITAS) that requires proof of a high annual income. No tourist visa authorises you to work inside Indonesia, and there have been crackdowns and deportations of foreigners working without permission — check current requirements, durations and amounts on the official immigration source before you decide, because they change often. Add Bali's tourist levy paid on entry (around ≈US$10, easiest paid online before you land). Three: rent. Plenty of villas ask for 6 or 12 months upfront, often in cash and without a serious contract; never pay a year for something you haven't seen in person, and be sceptical of the too-perfect Facebook listings. Then the obvious: rainy season November to March (with plastic washing up on the west-coast beaches), Canggu traffic that turns 5 km into 40 minutes, near-constant construction and party noise in the nomad areas, tap water you can't drink, and prices climbing every year.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
