Dallas

Dallas is a major North Texas metropolis known for business, modern architecture, arts and history marked by 1963. In Deep Ellum, a historic Black music district with murals, concert venues, bars and restaurants. Sixth Floor Museum provides another concrete reference: a museum in the former book depository examining John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Its regional scale and heat make grouping visits by district essential instead of crossing town repeatedly.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Dallas? How much do you need per month in Dallas?
Dallas works as a base if you already earn in dollars and want a big city with first-world internet, two airports (DFW is an American Airlines hub with direct flights to much of Latin America), and no state income tax. It's one of the cheaper large US metros to rent in — below Miami or New York — with a huge Latino life: Spanish here isn't a tourist thing, it's the everyday language of entire neighborhoods. It works badly if you're chasing arbitrage or don't want to drive: prices are still first-world, and the city is built around the car, so without one your life shrinks to three or four walkable bubbles plus whatever the train reaches.

Very good, and honestly not the problem here. AT&T Fiber covers much of Dallas, Spectrum reaches almost everywhere over cable, and parts of the metro also have Frontier; a gigabit runs ≈US$70-85 a month and actually delivers, with low latency for video calls. As in any US city, it depends on the exact address: before signing a lease, ask which provider serves THAT building — some complexes are locked to a single provider, and some blocks only have cable. 5G coverage is solid across the metroplex. The weak link isn't the internet, it's the power: Texas runs its own electrical grid (ERCOT), isolated from the rest of the country, and it has failed badly — the February 2021 winter storm left millions without power for days, and winter ice storms and summer thunderstorms knock out power for hours in specific parts of the Dallas area. If your work can't take an outage, keep a big battery and your phone as a hotspot; that covers you almost every time.
CoworkingCoworking
A big scene, but corporate rather than nomad: Dallas is an office city, so there's plenty of well-equipped space with meeting rooms — the crowd is consultants and local startups, not backpackers with laptops. The big chains operate here (WeWork and Industrious around Uptown and downtown), and the best-known local option is Common Desk, which started in Deep Ellum and spread across the metroplex with a more relaxed, coffee-shop-inside format. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$150-250 and a dedicated desk ≈US$300-500; day passes are usually ≈US$25-35 and many places give you a free trial day. Confirm locations and prices before you show up — Dallas coworkings open, move, and close often, and the brands change hands. Real alternative: there's a solid specialty coffee culture in Deep Ellum, Bishop Arts, and Lower Greenville, though several shops deliberately have few outlets and mediocre wifi so you don't camp for four hours.
Uptown and Knox-Henderson is the most walkable part of the city and where almost every newcomer with a budget lands: new apartment buildings, gyms, bars, the Katy Trail for running, and the free McKinney Avenue trolley (the M-Line). Also the priciest and the most generic. Deep Ellum, east of downtown, is the brick-warehouse, mural, live-music neighborhood: lofts, coworkings, and the most creative atmosphere — in exchange for bar noise until late on weekends and a strip that gets rough in the small hours. Bishop Arts and North Oak Cliff, across the Trinity River, is the best mix of price, food, and street life: deep Mexican-American roots, a few genuinely walkable blocks, and rent below Uptown — though it's gentrifying fast, and outside those blocks you need a car again. Lower Greenville, Lakewood, and East Dallas are houses, trees, and quiet, with White Rock Lake next door for running and paddling; it's where people move once they've decided to stay. If you'd rather pay less and don't mind suburbia, Richardson and Plano to the north sit on the DART Red Line, hold the tech corridor, and have a huge Indian and Asian community with excellent food.
ComunidadCommunity
Here's the big advantage if you speak Spanish: Dallas is a deeply Latino city — roughly four in ten city residents are Hispanic — and in Oak Cliff, Pleasant Grove, Bachman Lake, or the northwest you can run your entire life in Spanish, from the mechanic to the doctor. That's a huge relief your first month. What you won't find is a nomad community: Dallas isn't on the circuit, there are no welcome dinners or the newcomer ecosystem you get in Medellín or Mexico City, and the people you meet work here full-time. You make friends through activities, not through housing: running clubs on the Katy Trail and around White Rock, gyms and classes, rec sports leagues, tech and startup meetups (very active), churches if that's your thing. Two honest frictions: professional life and meetups run in English, so Spanish carries your daily errands but not your work life; and the sheer size kills spontaneity — meeting someone can mean a 30-40 minute drive each way, so plans get scheduled days ahead instead of just happening.
What a friend would tell you, unvarnished. The car isn't optional. DART runs one of the largest light rail networks in the US, but it covers corridors, not the city: if you live outside Uptown, Deep Ellum, downtown, or the Red Line heading north, going carless costs you hours. Budget for a rental or daily Ubers, and watch the insurance: arriving with no US driving history, quotes jump hard — get several before you commit, because it can be the line item that breaks your budget. The weather. June through September is brutal: normal highs of 35-37 °C (95-99 °F) with long stretches above 38 °C (100 °F) and nights that barely cool off; the power bill hits ≈US$180-250 in July and August and is almost never included. March through June is severe storm, hail, and tornado season in North Texas — hail here genuinely wrecks cars, which is why everyone fights over covered parking — and in winter a single ice storm can shut the city down for two or three days. The price you see isn't the price you pay: add 8.25% tax and ~20% tip. Renting is the hard part: standard 12-month leases, income verification (usually earning 3x the rent), and a credit check; if you just arrived with no US credit, expect a double deposit, months up front, or a guarantor service — and month-to-month furnished places carry a steep premium. Healthcare: there's no public coverage; one uninsured ER visit runs into the thousands. Get travel or international health insurance before you board the plane, no exceptions. Safety: the neighborhoods above are normal, but crime in Dallas is heavily concentrated by area — the south and southeast sides and around Fair Park call for more judgment, and Deep Ellum has had late-night incidents at bar closing time. Visa: the US has no digital nomad visa. ESTA (Visa Waiver Program countries only) gives you 90 days; on a B1/B2 tourist visa — what most Latin Americans use — the immigration officer decides your stay, usually up to 6 months, and working for a US employer isn't allowed. Working remotely for your own company abroad is a tolerated gray area, but showing up and saying "I'm here to work" is the fastest way to get sent home.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
