Columbus
Aprox. 850,106 habitantesApprox. 850,106 people
Columbus is the capital of Ohio and its most populous city, in the heart of the American Midwest. It's dominated by Ohio State University, one of the largest in the country, which gives it a young, sporty, steadily growing feel. Unlike the region's old industrial cities, Columbus thrives on insurance, tech and education. It's a city of neighborhoods with character —from the historic brick of German Village to the art and nightlife of the Short North— threaded by the Scioto and Olentangy rivers.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Columbus? How much do you need per month in Columbus?
Columbus is one of the cheapest big cities in the United States, but "cheap for the US" is still expensive for a nomad: no month here comes in under four figures. It works if you earn in dollars and want a calm, genuinely livable base with a huge university (Ohio State) and none of the New York or Austin pricing. It doesn't work if you're stretching a Latin American budget, if you don't want to depend on a car, or if you need a ready-made nomad scene — there isn't one, this is a city of people who actually live here.

Presupuesta ≈US$60–80/mes. Internet is not a problem here, and that's one of the better reasons to pick Columbus. AT&T offers fiber across much of the city with symmetric 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps plans, and where it doesn't reach, Spectrum cable gives you fast download but noticeably weaker upload — which is exactly the number that matters for video calls. Budget ≈US$60–80/month. The network is stable, there are no chronic outages or censorship, and 5G coverage is solid citywide. One caveat: check the exact address before you sign, because fiber vs. cable changes almost block by block and a building may be locked to a single provider.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene exists but it's built for local founders and small teams, not for nomads passing through: almost everything is sold by the month and day or week rates are rare. COhatch, which started in Ohio, has several locations in the city and suburbs, and the Idea Foundry in Franklinton is the big classic maker-and-startup space. A flexible desk runs ≈US$150–250/month and a dedicated desk ≈US$250–350, though prices vary by location — confirm before you commit. The alternative people here actually use is the Columbus public library, which is excellent, free and well connected, plus cafés in the Short North and Clintonville, where nobody hurries you out for working a whole morning.
Short North is the obvious pick if you want to walk everywhere: galleries, bars, restaurants, and some of the highest rents in the city. Right next door, Italian Village and Victorian Village are much the same but more residential and slightly cheaper — that's where remote workers usually land. German Village, south of downtown, is the pretty brick-and-cobblestone neighborhood: quiet, pricey for what it is, and light on nightlife. Clintonville, further north, is the best value: houses, cafés, thirtysomethings, and still close to campus. The University District is the cheapest thing near the center, but it's Ohio State student territory with all the noise that implies.
ComunidadCommunity
Don't expect the nomad bubble of Medellín or Lisbon: here you meet people through work, the university, or a hobby, not in a coliving. The upside is that Ohio State brings tens of thousands of students and researchers from all over, so there are plenty of foreigners and the city is used to them. Columbus has a real, visible Latino community, especially on the west side and up north, with Spanish-language grocery stores, taquerías and churches, and it's also home to one of the largest Somali populations in the US. Even so, the day-to-day language is English, no exceptions — you'll need it for paperwork, leases and work. For meeting people, rec sports leagues, breweries and the tech meetups all work and are fairly active.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres cosas. Three things. One: the United States has no digital nomad visa, full stop. You come in on ESTA (90 days, if your country qualifies) or a B1/B2 tourist visa, and working remotely for a foreign employer is a grey area nobody will clarify for you in writing — don't count on staying long or "sorting it out from here," and don't show up planning to work for US clients on tourist status. Two: rentals run on 12-month leases and landlords want US credit history and income of about three times the rent, which a newcomer doesn't have — in practice you end up in an Airbnb or a furnished corporate apartment, well above the averages you see quoted. Three: the winter. November through March is genuinely cold, with snow and long stretches of grey days; if that flattens your mood, Columbus will be hard, and heating shows up on the bill. And life without a car is limited: COTA is buses only, it's slow, and it doesn't cover the city well. Also, health insurance is not optional here — one uninsured emergency runs into the thousands.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
