Much of its life revolves around Fort Campbell, the large US Army post that straddles both states and gives the city a military character and a young, growing population. It's also home to Austin Peay State University. The historic downtown, with its red-brick courthouse, keeps the air of a southern river town, while the outskirts sprawl with new subdivisions. It's less than an hour from Nashville.
