It was French territory in India until the mid-20th century, and that past still shows in its riverside promenade —the Strand—, its Sacred Heart church and a few European-style buildings. It's a calm Bengali town, best known for the Jagaddhatri Puja and its spectacular illuminations, a local craft exported to festivals across the region.
