It was an industrial powerhouse in the 19th and 20th centuries and today is a working-class city with real economic struggles but a notable waterfront. Its historic figure is P. T. Barnum, the circus impresario, who served as mayor here. It sits just over an hour by train from New York, so many use it as a cheaper base than the city.
