Boston is the capital of Massachusetts and the leading city of New England, on the northeastern US coast. It's among the country's oldest cities and a cradle of the American Revolution: much of that history unfolded in its streets and is now walked via the Freedom Trail. It's also a university capital — Harvard and MIT sit across the river in Cambridge — with a walkable, red-brick, almost European feel rare in the US. Golden autumns, baseball at Fenway, and clam chowder by the sea.

Autumn (September-October) is glorious with New England foliage; spring and summer work well too. Winter is cold and snowy.

An expensive city, among the priciest in the US for lodging. Museums and neighbourhood food help, but cheap beds are hard to find.
EntradaEntry
EE. Verifica tu caso. The US requires an ESTA (for Visa Waiver countries) or a visa by nationality. Arrange it before flying. Check your case.
The subway (the 'T'), the oldest in the US, plus lots of walking: Boston is compact and walkable. Driving downtown is a headache best avoided.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Boston? How much do you need per month in Boston?
Boston works if your base needs to sit close to universities, biotech, healthcare or venture capital: it's a small, walkable city with decent public transit and solid internet. It does not work if your goal is stretching money — it's one of the most expensive cities in the US and rent eats more than half your budget. And watch the immigration side: the US has no digital nomad visa, so you depend on your tourist status (Spain and most of Europe use the visa waiver with ESTA; in Latin America only Chile — everyone else needs a B1/B2 visa), and in no case can you work for US clients or companies.

You won't suffer here, but it isn't all fiber the way people assume. The dominant provider in Boston and in Cambridge/Somerville is cable (Xfinity/Comcast); Verizon Fios exists but only in parts of the city, and some neighborhoods have Astound. Typical plans run ≈300 Mbps to 1 Gbps down for ≈US$60-90 a month. The detail that matters if you do video calls or upload heavy files: on cable, upload is far lower than download (tens of Mbps), while fiber is symmetrical — ask about upload before you sign. It's stable: no scheduled blackouts, no routine outages. 5G covers the whole city and works well (unlimited from ≈US$30 on budget carriers, ≈US$60-80 on the majors), though some subway tunnel stretches drop signal. The real risk is winter storms, which occasionally knock out power for a few hours in residential areas.
CoworkingCoworking
The scene is strong but built for startups and biotech, not for passing nomads: most spaces sell offices and dedicated desks, with flexible monthly passes as an afterthought. Budget ≈US$300-450 a month for a hot desk and considerably more for a dedicated one. Brands that actually operate here: WeWork, Industrious, Workbar (a local area chain) and CIC in Kendall Square, the classic hub of the startup ecosystem. Free and widely used alternative: public libraries — the Boston Public Library at Copley is huge and has work rooms and study tables — plus Cambridge and Somerville cafés, though in student areas they fill up during exam season.
Cambridge (Central and Kendall Square) is where tech workers cluster: expensive, very walkable, with MIT and Harvard around it. Somerville (Davis and Union Square) is for people who want the same vibe for a bit less, with more neighborhood life; since the Green Line was extended to Union Square and Medford it's far better connected. Allston and Brighton are the cheap zone by definition — student-heavy, loud, old buildings — and where you actually find shared rooms. Jamaica Plain is the middle ground: green, quieter, a real Latino community and still on the Orange Line. If you're after prestige and price doesn't matter, Back Bay and South End; the Seaport is new, pricey and fairly soulless.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting people is easy if you plug into the circuit: there are tech, biotech and startup meetups almost weekly, and the student population (Harvard, MIT, BU, Northeastern) refreshes the city every September. The flip side: many of those people are here for a semester, and local friendships take time — Boston has a fair reputation for being socially cold to newcomers. Day-to-day language is English and you'll need it for everything. The Hispanic community is large: East Boston and Chelsea concentrate Salvadoran, Colombian and Central American residents, and Jamaica Plain has Dominican and Puerto Rican roots, with businesses and services in Spanish.
Three things that hurt. One: winter is real — snow, ice, and dark after 4pm from November to March; if you've never lived that, underestimating it is the classic mistake. Two: the rental market revolves around the academic calendar. Most leases start September 1 and run 12 months, so finding something short mid-year is hard and expensive; on top of that, Boston brokers still commonly charge a fee equal to one month's rent, plus deposit and first month up front — you can need three or four months' rent in cash on signing day. Three: immigration and healthcare. The US has no digital nomad visa. If your country is in the visa waiver program (Spain and most of Europe; in Latin America only Chile) you enter on ESTA for up to 90 days; if not — Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and the rest — you need a B1/B2 visa, which usually admits you for up to six months per entry. In no case can you work for US companies or clients, and it's the officer at the border, not your visa, who decides how long you stay. Medical care without insurance is brutal — an ER visit runs into thousands of dollars — so insurance isn't optional. And about the subway: the MBTA improved a lot after the track repair program that wrapped up in late 2024, but weekend line shutdowns for construction are still common; check alerts before counting on it for anything that matters.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
