It was capital first of the Bahmani Sultanate and then the Barid Shahi kings, which is where its huge fort, the Persian-tiled Mahmud Gawan madrasa, and the royal tombs at Ashtur come from. It's also the birthplace of bidriware, the silver-inlay-on-blackened-alloy metalwork still made by hand in old-town workshops.
