It was a princely capital, founded in the 18th century as a trading port, and that still shapes it: commerce, industry and a harbor of powerful tides. Nearby lies Alang, the world's largest ship-breaking yard, where tankers and freighters from half the planet are dismantled by hand. The city also has a link to Mahatma Gandhi, who studied at its Samaldas College. It's an honest Gujarati stop, not a postcard destination.
