It's also the cradle of California's market-driven cuisine, home to the Gourmet Ghetto where Alice Waters opened Chez Panisse. From the Berkeley Hills you see the whole bay, and BART drops you in San Francisco in twenty minutes. Coffee, bookstores, protest and great food.
