For over a century it was a British foothold—the 'Bencoolen' of the spice trade—and from that era it keeps Fort Marlborough by the sea. It was also the place of exile of Sukarno, Indonesia's future first president, whose exile house can be visited. The region is famous as home to Rafflesia arnoldii, the largest flower in the world.
