Its history is deeply colonial: this held one of the oldest British military cantonments in India, and it was in this barracks that the sepoy Mangal Pandey lit the spark of the 1857 rebellion. On the riverbank, Gandhi Ghat keeps a memorial with part of Gandhi's ashes. It's a dense suburb-city, well linked by train to Kolkata, more than a destination in its own right.
