Austin

Aprox. 931,830 habitantesApprox. 931,830 people

Austin is Texas's oddity: a tech and music capital ('the live music capital of the world'), progressive and green in the middle of the most conservative state, with its motto 'keep Austin weird'. Tacos, food trucks, swimming lakes and festivals like SXSW. Warm and booming — it grew so fast it's no longer cheap — but still a blast.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Austin? How much do you need per month in Austin?

Austin is a frictionless base: first-world internet, everything works, great food, live music almost any night of the week. The catch is the price tag and the car: it's expensive and built for driving, not for walking. It works if you bill in dollars at US rates (say north of US$5,000/month) and want easy quality of life; it doesn't work if you came to stretch your money, because one month here buys you roughly two in Mexico City or three in Medellín.

Si tu trabajo no perdona caídas, ten batería y datos móviles como plan B.Among the best in the United States, with one caveat: it depends on the exact address. Google Fiber and AT&T Fiber cover much of the city and Spectrum reaches nearly everywhere over cable; gigabit runs ≈US$70-80 a month and actually delivers, with low latency for video calls. Before signing a lease, ask which provider serves THAT building: some blocks only have cable, and some buildings are locked to a single provider. 5G coverage is solid citywide. The weak link isn't the internet, it's the power: Texas runs its own electrical grid (ERCOT), isolated from the rest of the country, and it has failed badly — the February 2021 winter storm left millions without power for days. In very hot summers you'll also see peak-hour conservation appeals. If your work can't tolerate an outage, keep a battery and mobile data as plan B.

CoworkingCoworking

Strong scene — Austin is a tech and startup town. Capital Factory downtown is the ecosystem's reference point (events, demo days, founders raising money); on top of that you have the big chains like WeWork and Industrious, plus a handful of independent spaces spread between downtown and the east side. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$150-250, a dedicated desk ≈US$300-400, and most places sell day passes if you want to try before committing. Alternatives: the Central Library on Cesar Chavez is free, has terraces and is genuinely great for working, and cafés with wifi are everywhere — though the East Austin and South Congress ones fill up, and some go laptop-free on weekends.

East Austin (East Cesar Chavez, Holly, Chestnut): the most walkable part of town, bars and coffee shops on foot, where most young newcomers land. South Congress, Bouldin Creek and Travis Heights: pretty and pricey, one bridge from downtown with Zilker and the river right there. Downtown and Rainey Street: towers with gyms and pools, everything close by, but the most expensive option and loud with nightlife on weekends. Hyde Park and North Loop: old bungalows, quiet, next to the university, the best day-to-day value. Mueller: a planned neighborhood northeast on the old airport site, parks and bike lanes and a walkable core — but it isn't the cheap option it looks like, prices run close to central, and you'll want a car to leave the bubble.

ComunidadCommunity

Easy to meet people, but be clear-eyed: this isn't a nomad community, it's people who actually live here. Circles form around work, sports (run clubs, gyms, pickleball) and tech/startup events rather than expat bars. There are meetups nearly every day and the city calendar helps a lot (SXSW in March, ACL in October, live music on weeknights). Day-to-day life happens in English: Spanish is everywhere — close to a third of the city is Hispanic — and on the east and south sides you'll be understood fine, but you'll need functional English to work and make friends.

Heat from May to September is brutal: weeks on end above 100 °F, and A/C pushes your power bill to ≈US$200 or more in July and August — almost never included in the rent. Almost everything requires a car: CapMetro exists but it's slow and doesn't reach everywhere, so budget for Uber or a rental. The price on the menu or the shelf isn't what you pay: add 8.25% sales tax and ~20% tip. Standard leases run 12 months with income and credit checks — and if you just arrived with no US credit history, expect a double deposit, several months up front, or a guarantor service; month-to-month furnished places carry a steep premium. SXSW week (March), ACL (October) and the F1 Grand Prix (fall) push lodging to double or triple. From December to February comes "cedar fever", mountain cedar pollen that flattens people with flu-like symptoms even if they've never had allergies. And if you're not American: the US has no digital nomad visa. ESTA (Visa Waiver Program countries only) gives you 90 days; a B1/B2 tourist visa — what most of Latin America uses — leaves the length up to the officer at the border, typically up to 6 months. Working remotely on that status is a grey area: don't build your life in Austin without talking to an immigration lawyer first.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
