Amritsar is the spiritual city of Sikhism, in India's Punjab, near the Pakistan border. Its heart is the Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib), a gold-clad shrine in the middle of a sacred pool that welcomes pilgrims from around the world day and night; its community kitchen (langar) feeds tens of thousands of people free every day. Amritsar also carries painful memory: the Jallianwala Bagh massacre happened here in 1919. It's an intense, generous city with hearty Punjabi food.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Amritsar? How much do you need per month in Amritsar?

It works if your job is async or Europe-facing (IST, UTC+5:30, gives you half a workday overlapping Madrid and almost nothing with the Americas), if you're genuinely interested in Punjab, and if you don't need a nomad community — because there isn't one here. It doesn't work if you want a coworking scene, a social life in English, or clean air: Punjab winters bring some of the worst air quality on the planet, and summer clears 44 °C.

UU. no tanto. This is the strong point and the surprise: Indian fibre is cheap and good. A 100 Mbps plan runs ≈US$8–10 a month with Jio Fiber, Airtel or BSNL, and 300 Mbps around ≈US$15–18; in planned areas like Ranjit Avenue installation takes days, not weeks. Latency to Europe is fine; to the US, less so. Mobile is an even better deal: Jio or Airtel 4G/5G with tens of gigs for ≈US$4–6 a month and solid coverage across the city — always keep a data plan as backup, because you will use it. The weak link is power: at the peak of the heat (May–July, with the whole region irrigating rice) there are cuts, sometimes a couple of hours long, and any decent building runs an inverter or generator. Before signing a lease, ask explicitly whether there's an inverter and whether it carries the router as well as the fans. One extra India detail: the government blocks sites and apps fairly regularly and has shut down mobile internet region-wide during moments of tension — it has happened in Punjab. Arrive with a VPN installed, and keep fibre as backup for mobile and vice versa.

CoworkingCoworking

Be honest with yourself: there is no coworking scene here. Small spaces have opened and closed, mostly along the Ranjit Avenue – Lawrence Road – Majitha Road axis, and they're generally shared offices for local startups and study-abroad agents, not places with an international remote community. I won't give you names because the ones I remember may not exist any more — check Google Maps the week you land and go see it before paying. Where something exists, expect roughly ≈US$40–80 a month for a flexible desk, but treat that as an order of magnitude, not a quote. In practice, most people working remotely from Amritsar work from home and use Ranjit Avenue cafés or hotel lobbies for a change of scene. If coworking is non-negotiable for you, this isn't your city: Chandigarh, about four hours away by road, has considerably more.

Ranjit Avenue is the short answer: the planned block-by-block area (A, B, C, D), with the widest streets, the best apartments, cafés and private hospitals. It's where almost anyone arriving from outside lands. Green Avenue and Golden Avenue are the quieter, more residential version of the same thing — good if you want a whole house and silence. Majitha Road is the new corridor, with the malls and the recent buildings; noisier and more traffic-heavy, but that's where the modern housing is. Basant Avenue, next to Guru Nanak Dev University, is cheaper and younger, full of student rooms and PGs. The old walled city around the Golden Temple is fascinating to walk and a bad idea to live in: extremely dense, noisy around the clock and packed with religious tourism. And note: "people from outside" here almost always means Punjabis from the diaspora (Canada, UK, Australia) back for a few months — non-Indian foreigners actually living in the city are very few.

ComunidadCommunity

Zero nomad community. No remote-worker meetups, no expat groups with a life of their own, no Spanish speakers in any number. What there is instead is Punjabi hospitality, which is real and slightly disarming: people invite you to eat with an ease that doesn't exist in Europe or Latin America, and in two weeks you'll know more families than friends your own age. Daily life runs in Punjabi and Hindi; university-educated people, hospitals, hotels and banks handle English fine, but with the rickshaw driver, the vegetable seller or your landlord you'll want basic Hindi phrases or a translator app. If you want younger people and some mixing, the area around Guru Nanak Dev University and the Ranjit Avenue cafés are your best bet. And the langar at the Golden Temple — free food for anyone, every single day — isn't a tourist anecdote: it's the best place to understand this city, and if you volunteer, to meet people.

The air. Stubble burning starts with the rice harvest (late October and November) and, with the winter thermal inversion, leaves all of Punjab under a layer of smoke that drags on into January: weeks at pollution levels that would be a public-health emergency in Europe. If you have asthma or small kids, just don't spend those months here; if you stay, buy an air purifier on day one. The rest: May and June hit a dry 42–45 °C, the monsoon from July to September brings humidity and flooded streets, and in December–January dense fog delays flights and trains for days at a time. Legally, India has no digital nomad visa and a tourist e-visa doesn't authorise you to work — plenty of people work remotely anyway, but go in knowing you're in a grey zone; for long stays check the FRRO registration rules, and be aware that whoever hosts you is required to report you as a foreigner (Form C), so many informal landlords simply won't rent to you. Add: rental deposits of one to three months, horns and late-night weddings, and traffic that respects nobody. And one thing specific to here: you're half an hour from the Pakistan border (Wagah), so tension between the two countries lands on this city before any other — border closures, internet shutdowns, occasional airspace closures that hit the airport. Personal safety: it's a calm city to walk by day and even at night in good areas, far more so than people assume — the real risks here are the traffic and the air, not crime.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
