The city spills across ridges and steep slopes above 1,000 m, with houses clinging to the inclines and streets that climb and drop without pause. It's the land of the Mizo people, mostly Christian and known for their choral singing, and it has a calm, orderly atmosphere quite unlike the rest of India.
