Abha
Aprox. 210,886 habitantesApprox. 210,886 people
Abha is the capital of the Asir region, in the mountainous southwest of Saudi Arabia, over 2,200 meters up on the Sarawat range. That altitude changes everything: while the rest of the country bakes, Abha stays cool, with mist and summer rains that have made it the Saudis' summer refuge. The landscape is farmed terraces, stone villages and cliffs dropping toward the Tihama plain and the Red Sea. It's greener, wetter and more mountainous than most people picture of Arabia.
Mejor épocaBest time
Summer (June-August) is the local high season: cool temperatures and mist while the rest of the country is an oven. Spring is also pleasant. Winter can be cold given the altitude.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Abha? How much do you need per month in Abha?
Elígela si quieres montaña, aire limpio y costos bajos y no te importa estar bastante solo; no la elijas si necesitas coworking, comunidad remota o vida nocturna.Abha is a mountain city at ~2,270 m in Asir province: cool, foggy summers that make it half of Saudi Arabia's summer refuge. As a nomad base it works if your life is your laptop and your work lives elsewhere — it's cheap by Saudi standards, calm, genuinely scenic, and the riyal is pegged to the dollar (3.75), so your budget doesn't move month to month. But there's no nomad scene, no digital nomad visa, no alcohol, and daily life runs in Arabic. Pick it if you want mountains, clean air and low costs and don't mind being fairly alone; skip it if you need coworking, a remote community or nightlife.

Saudi Arabia has some of the best mobile networks in the world and Abha benefits: solid 5G from STC, Mobily and Zain across the built-up city — often faster than home fiber — though it thins out fast once you head into the Asir highlands and villages. Fiber exists in newer buildings and the newer part of town, with stable 100–200 Mbps and pricier plans above that, but in older construction or hillside neighborhoods you may find only copper, or nothing. Ask about the SPECIFIC building before signing, not about "the city". No systematic blackouts; what does knock service out occasionally are the seasonal thunderstorms and rain. On censorship, I won't sell you the ten-year-old version: the VoIP calling ban was lifted in 2017 and WhatsApp/FaceTime work normally; what remains is state web filtering on certain content and scattered services. Still, keep a backup VPN and confirm BEFORE you move that the specific platforms your work depends on actually open.
CoworkingCoworking
Be honest with yourself: you won't find the nomad coworking you're picturing here. Abha runs on government offices, King Khalid University and domestic tourism, not on remote work, and I'm not aware of any established international coworking space worth naming for you — if someone names one, verify it yourself before counting on it. What does exist are government-linked entrepreneurship centers (the Monsha'at SME ecosystem) and university-orbit spaces, but those usually serve Saudis with a registered business, not a foreigner with a laptop. Your real office will be cafés: Saudi café culture is strong, people genuinely work in them, wifi is decent and they stay open very late. If you want a formal dedicated desk, that lives in Riyadh or Jeddah (≈US$200–400/month), not here.
Foreigners here are mostly work expats — doctors, teachers, engineers from Egypt, Sudan, India, Pakistan and the Philippines — not Western nomads, and they spread out like this: Abha Al Jadeed (New Abha) is the obvious bet, with the newest buildings, better fiber and furnished apartments. Al Manhal is residential, quiet and close to services. The downtown / Al Muftaha area (the arts village, museums, the market) has more street life and older buildings: cheaper, noisier in season. And Khamis Mushait, the twin city ~25 km away, is noticeably cheaper with more commerce, though you give up the mountain scenery that's the whole reason to come. Almost everything good assumes you have a car.
ComunidadCommunity
Hard, and I'll say it straight: there is no nomad community here. No remote-work meetups, no hostels where people like you turn up, and essentially no Spanish speakers. Daily life runs in Arabic: English works at the hospital, the university and with younger people, but far less than in Riyadh or Jeddah — in taxis, corner shops and paperwork you'll struggle without Arabic or a translator on your phone. Expat social life runs through work (hospital colleagues, university staff) and through fairly closed national communities: Egyptians with Egyptians, Filipinos with Filipinos. If you arrive with no local job and no prior connection, the realistic route is hiking and the café scene — and even then you'll be fairly alone. Saudis are genuinely hospitable, but social life happens in homes and among families, not in mixed public spaces.
The big one first: Saudi Arabia has no digital nomad visa. There's a one-year multiple-entry tourist e-visa, but the cap is roughly 90 days total within that year, not 90 days per entry — check whether your passport qualifies, the list changes. Working remotely on a tourist visa is a grey zone and gets you no residency, no bank account, no normal lease. Alcohol is genuinely illegal: not "frowned upon" — fines, deportation or jail. Don't test it. Asir's social norms are more conservative than Riyadh's or Jeddah's: the abaya hasn't been legally required since 2019, but dressing modestly isn't optional in practice, and an unmarried couple sharing an apartment depends on the landlord and the hotel, even though the law loosened. Leases go through the Ejar system and the norm is paying the full year, or in a few advance checks: bring cash or fight for monthly terms — and without an iqama many landlords won't even take the meeting. Add 15% VAT, already baked into almost everything you buy. The climate misleads: this isn't the desert you're picturing, it's mountains — cool summers but thick fog, rain and thunderstorms (heaviest March–May and July–August), and winter nights of 2–8°C, sometimes near freezing, in buildings with no central heating. And that cool summer season is exactly when half the country arrives on vacation: traffic, hotels and short-term rentals go through the roof. Without a car you're stuck: no metro, minimal public transport, and Uber/Careem work but thin out away from the center. Finally, the thing no travel blog will tell you: Abha sits a little over 100 km from the Yemeni border and its airport was hit by drone and missile attacks several times between 2019 and 2022. It's been calm since the 2022 truce, but it's a regional situation that can change — check your government's travel advisory before committing to a year's rent.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
