Dammam

Aprox. 768,602 habitantesApprox. 768,602 people

Dammam is the capital of Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province, on the shore of the Persian Gulf, and the urban center of the country's oil heartland. It forms a large conurbation with Dhahran —historic home of oil giant Aramco— and Al Khobar, the most commercial and laid-back of the three. It's a modern, hot, flat city that faces the sea: its Gulf corniche, fishing docks and the beaches of Half Moon Bay set the rhythm of outdoor life, especially at dusk. From here the King Fahd Causeway crosses the Gulf to Bahrain.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Dammam? How much do you need per month in Dammam?

Dammam — and Al Khobar, its twin next door — works if your job brings you here: energy, engineering, logistics, something Aramco-adjacent. As a base a nomad picks freely it barely makes sense: Saudi Arabia has no digital nomad visa, so legally you either live on an employer-sponsored iqama or enter as a tourist with no right to work. What's genuinely good: excellent internet, zero income tax, very high urban safety, reasonable food and transport prices. What hurts: paying a year of rent up front, the May-to-September summer at 45 °C with Gulf humidity, and a social life built around work rather than around cafés full of laptops.

This is the best part of living here. STC, Mobily and Zain fiber covers almost all of Dammam, Khobar and Dhahran, and 100–300 Mbps symmetric or near-symmetric is the norm; 500 Mbps or 1 Gbps is doable in newer buildings. It's stable: no scheduled blackouts, no chronic outages, the grid holds through summer, and video calls don't drop. Mobile 5G ranks among the fastest in the world on speed tests, with even coverage across the whole conurbation, so a data plan as backup handles any hiccup. Two honest caveats: WhatsApp-style calls do work (unblocked back in 2017), but there is country-level content filtering and plenty of people live on a VPN; and signing up for fiber usually requires an iqama, so without residency you'll depend on building internet or a prepaid 5G router.

CoworkingCoworking

Small scene, aimed at local startups and the Aramco / KFUPM university ecosystem (the Dhahran Techno Valley tech park is the real anchor of all that, though it's not a coworking for passing nomads). What exists clusters in Al Khobar and around Dhahran, and it tends to run on corporate memberships more than on walk-in monthly passes. I won't invent names for you: check the map once you're on the ground, since places open and close fast. If you land a monthly rate, budget ≈US$150–300 as an order of magnitude — it varies a lot, confirm on site — and ask whether they'll take you on tourist status. In practice most laptop work happens in specialty coffee shops, which are plentiful here, genuinely good, full of outlets and viciously air-conditioned — that's the city's real coworking.

Al Khobar is where foreigners actually want to live: Al Ulaya and Al Aqrabiyah for modern apartments, walkable cafés and restaurants, and the Corniche for Gulf views. Dhahran has the Aramco camp, a gated world of its own open only to company employees; around it sit quiet residential areas tied to KFUPM university. In Dammam proper, Ash Shati (the corniche side) and Al Faisaliyah hold decent buildings at lower prices than Khobar, with less street life. Then there are the compounds: gated Western-style complexes with pools and looser rules behind the walls — usually very expensive and built for expat families on company contracts.

ComunidadCommunity

A huge foreign population — Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Egyptian, Bangladeshi, Lebanese, some Westerners — but organized by nationality and by employer, not through open meetups. If you don't arrive with a job, it's hard to break in: social life happens in homes, in mosques, in countrymen's WhatsApp groups and at colleagues' dinners, not at public events you can just show up to alone. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent, a handful of Latin American engineers in the energy sector. Day to day runs in Arabic, but English works in offices, hospitals, restaurants and with almost all service staff; you'll survive without Arabic, though a few phrases open doors. The weekend is Friday and Saturday — and note that outside work, socializing with locals of the opposite sex is far less casual than you may be used to.

First thing: there is no digital nomad visa. You live here on an employer-sponsored iqama, or you enter on the tourist eVisa — which does not authorize work, not even remote work for a client abroad. And not every Latin American passport qualifies for that eVisa directly: the route that usually does work is holding a valid US, UK or Schengen visa or residence permit (already used at least once), so check your specific case before booking. There's also Premium Residency, the Saudi "green card", but it costs tens of thousands of dollars and isn't a realistic option for an ordinary nomad. Second: rent is usually paid a year in advance, sometimes in two installments, with the contract registered on the Ejar platform; showing up with one month's cushion doesn't work here — and many apartments come unfurnished, sometimes without a fitted kitchen or AC units, so ask exactly what's included before you sign. Third: the summer. May to September means 45 °C with Gulf humidity that feels worse than Riyadh; from June to August the street ceases to exist and you live between air conditioning and a car. Add the spring shamal dust storms, which shut you indoors for a couple of days and are rough if you have asthma. Fourth: alcohol is illegal, with no grey zone and no expat exception, and consequences run from fines to deportation; the classic escape is the one-hour drive over the King Fahd Causeway to Bahrain, which half of Khobar does on weekends. Fifth: this is a car city — public transport is weak and there's no metro — so budget for daily Uber or for a licence and a vehicle; the real hazard to your health here isn't crime, which is very low, it's traffic. Finally, although social rules have loosened a lot in recent years, this is still a conservative country: dress modestly, respect the public fast during Ramadan, and if you're travelling as an unmarried couple, confirm up front how your landlord handles it.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
