Jeddah is the great Red Sea city and Saudi Arabia's historic port, the gateway through which pilgrims have passed toward Mecca for centuries. It's the country's most open and cosmopolitan face: less rigid than Riyadh, with a sea breeze, a long waterfront (the Corniche) and a merchant tradition of people from across the Muslim world. Its jewel is Al-Balad, the old town of coral houses with wooden latticework ('rawashin'), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Intense, humid heat most of the year due to its coastal desert climate.

Mejor épocaBest time

November to March, when the heat eases and you can walk and dive comfortably. From May to September the Red Sea's mugginess is exhausting.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Jeddah? How much do you need per month in Jeddah?

Jeddah is the most relaxed, cosmopolitan city in Saudi Arabia: the Red Sea right there, world-class diving half an hour away, a huge specialty coffee scene, excellent internet, and a level of street safety few cities in the world match. It works if you're genuinely curious about the Arab world, work on Europe/Gulf hours, and don't mind that social life happens in cafés, homes and along the Corniche instead of bars. It doesn't work if you want cheap (it isn't), if you need a ready-made nomad community (it's tiny here compared to Dubai), or if humid May-to-October heat wrecks you — and note Saudi Arabia has no digital nomad visa, so legally you enter as a tourist on a clock.

Aquí no vas a sufrir. You won't suffer here. STC, Mobily and Zain fiber delivers stable hundreds of Mbps in modern buildings (plans run 200–500 Mbps and generally hold up), and power cuts are very rare. On mobile, Saudi Arabia consistently ranks near the top of global 5G speed rankings, so a generous data plan is a perfectly good backup for video calls. Two honest caveats: getting fiber in your own name normally requires an iqama (residency) or the landlord setting it up, so if you're on a tourist visa look for a furnished place with internet already included; and while WhatsApp and FaceTime calls stopped being blocked back in 2017, some sites and apps are filtered and plenty of people run a VPN by default. Buy one before you land, not after.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene exists but it's small and fairly corporate compared to Dubai: spaces inside office towers, entrepreneur hubs backed by Monsha'at (the SME authority), and hotels selling lobby or business-center day passes. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$150–270. I'm not naming specific spaces because they open and close fast and I'd rather not send you to one that's gone — search maps when you arrive and ask for a trial day before paying for a month. The practical truth is that Jeddah's real coworking is its specialty coffee shops. There are hundreds of them, genuinely good, with decent wifi, outlets and late hours; half the city works from them and nobody minds you holding a table for three hours.

Al Hamra: right by the Corniche, central, the traditional consulate and expat district. Pricey, but you walk to the sea and the best cafés are nearby. Al Rawdah: the value sweet spot for living — residential, calm, packed with restaurants and cafés, well connected. Al Zahra and Ash Shati (Al Shati): along the northern Corniche, newer buildings, great if you want to run or swim near home. Obhur (Abhur North): beach, compounds and resorts, much quieter, but far from everything and you'll be frustrated without a car. Al Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town, is beautiful for walking and breakfast, not for living.

ComunidadCommunity

Jeddah is deeply multicultural: Egyptians, Syrians, Lebanese, Yemenis, Sudanese, Pakistanis, Indians and Filipinos have been here for generations, and within the country the city has a reputation as the most open and hospitable. English gets you through offices, cafés, hospitals and apps; Arabic is the street language, and learning the basics visibly changes how you're treated. That said, the Western digital-nomad community is tiny — nothing like Dubai — and the Spanish-speaking one is nearly nonexistent outside a consulate or a company. Meeting people happens through work, cafés and gyms, and above all through invitations to homes: social life here is private, not bar-counter. Cinemas have been back since 2018, and there are concerts and mixed venues, but there's no legal alcohol and nights out mean restaurants and cafés until the small hours. Put yourself out there and say yes to invitations and Saudi hospitality is very real; wait for the city to socialize you and you'll feel isolated.

First and most serious: Saudi Arabia has no digital nomad visa. You enter on a tourist eVisa (multiple entry, valid a year for many nationalities) but with a cap on days of stay; the exact wording — whether the limit is per visit or cumulative per year — has shifted and is read differently by different sources, so check the official visa site before booking a flight. Working remotely on a tourist visa is a grey area and this is not the country to improvise in. Second: the heat. May to October means roughly 35–40°C with Red Sea humidity on top; it feels brutal and you live air-conditioner to air-conditioner. Third: rent. The local standard is an annual lease paid up front (in one or a few installments) and registered on Ejar, the official platform, which requires Saudi ID or an iqama; on a tourist visa you'll almost certainly end up in monthly furnished, which costs meaningfully more. Budget for that premium. Fourth: there's no metro (that's Riyadh) and public transport is limited, so you depend on Uber/Careem or renting a car, and both the traffic and the driving style are a lot. Fifth: winter rains genuinely flood Jeddah — drainage is its historic weak point, with deadly events in 2009 and 2011 and serious flooding since; avoid basements and low-lying areas. And the cultural part: no alcohol, during Ramadan you don't eat or drink in public in daylight and the whole schedule flips, plenty of shops still pause at prayer times (less than they used to, but it happens), and while the abaya is no longer required for foreign women, modest dress is expected. In exchange, street safety is extremely high and the riyal is pegged to the dollar (≈3.75 SAR), so the exchange rate never surprises you.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
