Riad

Aprox. 4,205,961 habitantesApprox. 4,205,961 people

Riyadh is the Saudi capital deep in the Najd desert: a city of skyscrapers, wide freeways and extreme heat that has opened to tourism for the first time in recent years. Alongside the new —the Kingdom Centre skybridge, vast malls— it keeps its roots in Al-Masmak fortress and, above all, in Diriyah, the birthplace of the Saudi dynasty on the outskirts. It's expensive, conservative and very car-dependent, but for anyone wanting to see the fastest-changing country in the region, it's the gateway.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Riad? How much do you need per month in Riad?

Riyadh works if your remote job pays well and you want to be inside the Gulf boom: new infrastructure, some of the best internet anywhere, very high personal safety, and a metro that finally makes part of the city reachable without a car. It does not work as a cheap, laid-back nomad base: rents climbed hard with Vision 2030, there is no digital nomad visa (you enter as a tourist, which caps how long you stay and how much you can set up), there's no alcohol or nightlife in the usual sense, and from May to September the heat keeps you indoors under AC. This is a city of expats on work contracts more than of laptops in cafés — though the café scene is genuinely excellent.

This is among the best you'll find as a nomad. Riyadh has fiber to the home across most of the city (STC, Mobily, Zain, Go); the everyday plans are 100–200 Mbps, with faster tiers available, and it's stable. Saudi mobile 5G ranks consistently near the top of global speed rankings — in many districts your phone beats the café Wi-Fi. No blackouts, no chronic outages; the grid is solid, which matters when your AC never stops. The practical catch: signing a fiber contract in your own name normally requires an iqama (residency) or national ID, so as a tourist you'll rely on the internet included with a furnished apartment, or on a 5G router with a prepaid SIM — which works very well. You can buy a tourist SIM with your passport (usually at the airport or an operator store), and it's typically tied to your visa's validity. One honest caveat: internet filtering exists in Saudi Arabia, some sites are blocked, and plenty of people keep a VPN out of habit — don't assume every service your work depends on is reachable until you've tested it.

CoworkingCoworking

Un flat white ≈US$4–6. The scene exists, but it's corporate and startup-flavored, not backpacker: polished spaces with ferocious AC inside office towers. International chains like Regus/IWG run several Riyadh locations, and there are local operators clustered around the King Abdullah Financial District and the entrepreneurship ecosystem — including The Garage, the government-backed startup campus. A monthly hot desk runs roughly US$185–400 (SAR 700–1,500); day passes exist but pricing varies a lot, so ask before you show up. What really dominates, though, is café culture: Riyadh has a huge and genuinely good specialty coffee scene — Half Million and Barn's are everywhere, plus dozens of local roasters — with Wi-Fi, outlets, and people working for hours. A flat white is ≈US$4–6. If your work is solo, plenty of months you skip the coworking entirely and live between cafés and hotel lobbies.

Al Olaya and Al Sulaimaniyah — the classic modern center: towers, restaurants, cafés, Kingdom Centre, and metro stations along Olaya Street. It's the closest Riyadh gets to walking somewhere, and where you'll find the most monthly furnished apartments. Hittin and Al Malqa (north) — newer build, quiet, expensive, families and executives; comfortable if you don't mind doing absolutely everything by car. KAFD and Al Nakheel — the financial district and the area around it: recent buildings, good metro links, office energy; worth it if your meetings land there. The Diplomatic Quarter (DQ / As-Safarat) — the greenest, leafiest, most walkable part of Riyadh, with trails and a calm feel; access is controlled and housing mostly goes to embassy and institutional staff, so as an independent nomad don't count on landing a place there.

ComunidadCommunity

Riyadh is full of foreigners — Indians, Pakistanis, Filipinos, Egyptians, Sudanese, Brits, Americans — but nearly all of them arrived on a work contract, not as nomads. That changes the dynamic: people meet through the office, the gym, padel (it's everywhere right now), or tech-ecosystem events rather than hostels and coworkings. English gets you through the professional world, apps, hospitals, and restaurants; Arabic is the language of daily life, and even basic phrases genuinely open doors. Spanish-speaking community: very small, mostly orbiting embassies and companies — don't expect the Latin scene of Medellín or Mexico City. There are tech and startup meetups, and LEAP, the big tech conference held in Riyadh in February, pulls in a chunk of the industry. The weekend is Friday–Saturday. And the obvious thing: with no bars, social life happens in homes, cafés, restaurants, and malls, and making friends takes longer and needs more deliberate effort than at a typical nomad hub.

First and most important: there is no digital nomad visa. You come in on the tourist e-visa (multiple entry, valid a year, with a stay cap of around 90 days per year — and not every nationality is eligible, so check the official site before you book a flight). That visa is for tourism: working for local clients is illegal, and working remotely for your company back home sits in a gray zone nobody will put in writing for you. If you're serious about staying, the real path is an iqama through an employer. Second: rent. Prices climbed hard from 2021 on, driven by Vision 2030 and the regional-HQ relocation push, and the local standard is paying rent a year up front under an Ejar contract, which requires Saudi ID — as a tourist you end up in a furnished or serviced apartment by the month, which costs considerably more. Add 15% VAT to almost everything. Third: paperwork friction. Without an iqama you can't open a Saudi bank account, and a surprising number of local apps and services expect a national ID or a local card; keep a card that works abroad and expect some things to simply be closed to you. Fourth: the heat. From May to September you're past 45 °C and the city turns indoors — home to car to mall; sandstorms happen and air quality drops. Fifth: distances. The metro helps enormously, but Riyadh is vast and still a car city; if you don't drive, budget for Careem/Uber seriously. And sixth: the city has opened up a lot (cinemas, concerts, mixed spaces, abaya no longer required for foreign women), but it's still conservative: zero alcohol, drug offenses carry very severe penalties, dress modestly, no public displays of affection, and be careful what you post online about the country or its government — that part is taken seriously. Personal safety and petty theft, on the other hand, are among the best anywhere; that's one thing you can stop worrying about.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
