Zanzíbar

Aprox. 403,658 habitantesApprox. 403,658 people

Zanzibar is the archipelago off the coast of Tanzania in the Indian Ocean, and its main city centres on Stone Town, the maze of coral-stone alleys named a World Heritage Site. For centuries it was a crossroads of worlds: Omani sultans, Indian merchants, spice traders and, shamefully, a major slave-trade port. From that past came its famous carved doors, its spices (cloves above all) and a unique Swahili cuisine. All around, white-sand beaches and turquoise water complete the picture.

Mejor épocaBest time

Tropical ecuatorial. Equatorial tropical. Best in the dry season (Jun-Oct) and the short dry spell in Jan-Feb. Long rains fall March to May. Hot and humid year-round.

PresupuestoBudget

There are two Zanzibars: the beach-resort one (pricey) and the local one. Eating Swahili food and riding dala-dalas keeps costs low; a backpacker can get by on 800-1,200 USD/month.

EntradaEntry

Tanzania offers visa on arrival or e-Visa for many nationalities. A yellow-fever certificate is often required if arriving from a risk country.

Stone Town is walked on foot (cars barely fit). For the north and east beaches take dala-dalas (local minibuses) or taxis. Reach the island by ferry from Dar es Salaam or by plane.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Zanzíbar? How much do you need per month in Zanzíbar?

Zanzibar works as a base if your job survives imperfect internet and power cuts, and if what you want is beach, kitesurfing and a small but very easy-to-join community (Paje). It does not work if you depend on critical video calls, serious medical care or city infrastructure — the island doesn't have it. And be careful with the "cheap" reputation: rent in the nomad areas is priced in dollars and nearly everything is imported, so it lands well above what you'd picture for East Africa.

This is the genuine weak spot, and don't paper over it when you plan. There's fiber in Stone Town and in the coastal tourist villages (Paje, Jambiani, Nungwi), with home plans typically in the tens of Mbps — enough to work, nothing to brag about, and real speeds drop when the village fills up in season. The issue isn't speed, it's consistency: Zanzibar gets both its power and its connectivity from the mainland by submarine cable, power cuts are part of island life (there have been island-wide blackouts lasting weeks in the past) and no power means no router. Starlink shows up more and more in east-coast guesthouses and coworkings and it changes the experience a lot — ask explicitly what a place has, and whether there's a generator or inverter, BEFORE you pay months upfront. Mobile 4G is decent on the east coast and in Stone Town, patchy inland, and data is cheap, so almost everyone works with a backup: phone hotspot plus a power bank. If your work can't tolerate dropping mid-call, this island will stress you out.

CoworkingCoworking

La mensualidad ronda ≈US$100–150 y el día suelto ≈US$10–15. Small but real scene, and almost all of it is in Paje. These are beach spaces attached to kite camps, hotels and cafés rather than serious offices: tables under a makuti roof, a fan, coffee, and an atmosphere where you know everyone within two days. Monthly passes run ≈US$100–150 and a day pass ≈US$10–15. Stone Town has a couple of more office-like options, useful if you have formal calls. A few years back the government launched an initiative called Silicon Zanzibar to attract tech companies to the island (centered on the Fumba Town development south of Stone Town), so there's some institutional movement — but don't expect a Lisbon or Medellín ecosystem. Don't trust names you find in old listicles either: spaces open, close and change hands with the season, so check local WhatsApp or Facebook groups that a place is still running before you move for it.

Paje is the nomad epicenter: wind for kitesurfing, long-stay housing and cafés with wifi all landed in the same village, and it's where you'll plug in fastest. Jambiani, just south, is the calmer and slightly cheaper version — same beach, less party, more people staying for months. Stone Town is the choice if you want a town: paperwork, banks, market, hospital, a life that doesn't revolve around the tide, in exchange for humid heat, noise and no swimmable beach. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north have the big advantage that you can actually swim at any hour (the tide doesn't drain the shore like on the east coast), but the vibe is resort and nightlife more than people working. And if you genuinely want to disappear, Bwejuu and the Michamvi peninsula are a short ride from Paje and far quieter.

ComunidadCommunity

Very easy to meet people if you're in Paje or Jambiani, and even easier if you kite — the kite school is the island's social club. The crowd skews European: lots of Italians, Germans, Poles and Russians (the Russian presence has grown a lot in recent years, with direct flights), and noticeably fewer Spanish speakers than Bali or Medellín, so if you're after a Spanish-language community you'll be on your own here. The local language is Swahili and learning a handful of words visibly changes how you're treated, but English gets you through everything tourism-related. Coordination happens in WhatsApp and Facebook groups more than on meetup platforms. Important: the island breathes in seasons. During the windy months (June–September and December–February) it's full and social life is constant; in April and May it empties out and you can end up quite alone.

What a friend would tell you before you book the flight. One: April and May are the long rains and half the island shuts down — don't make those your first months. Two: the east-coast tide is brutal, the sea pulls back hundreds of meters and there are hours of the day when you simply can't swim; if your fantasy is walking out of your room into the water whenever you want, your area is the north, not Paje. Three: Zanzibar is Muslim-majority and conservative. Swimwear is for the beach; in Stone Town and the villages shoulders and knees stay covered, and during Ramadan hours shift and many places don't serve food during the day. Four: medical care is limited — anything serious means evacuation to Dar es Salaam or Nairobi, so insurance with medical evacuation isn't optional, especially since nearly everyone rides a scooter and crashes are the most common injury; malaria is present and there are dengue outbreaks, so take the mosquito net and repellent seriously. Five, the practical stuff: to drive you need a Zanzibar driving permit (cheap, issued locally) and there are checkpoints that ask for it; the economy runs on cash, bring USD in newer series notes (ideally 2013 or later) because older ones get refused or take a worse rate, and ATMs are scarce outside Stone Town, Nungwi and Paje; rents are quoted in USD, often several months upfront and without a formal contract, so see the place in person before paying. On immigration: the tourist visa is issued on arrival or via eVisa (≈US$50, ≈US$100 for US citizens) for up to 90 days, there's no established digital nomad visa, and Zanzibar requires foreign visitors to buy a mandatory local travel insurance policy (≈US$40–45 for up to about three months) — amounts and rules have changed, so check the current status before you fly.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
