Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Arusha? How much do you need per month in Arusha?

Arusha works as a base if you want real Africa on the cheap: ≈1,400 m up, spring-like weather most of the year, the gateway to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, and Kilimanjaro a couple of hours down the road. English gets you through the safari, tourism and NGO world, and ≈US$700–800 a month buys a decent lean life. It does not work if you need flawless internet: fibre exists but only in certain pockets, the power cuts out often, and there is no built-out nomad scene — the foreigners here are NGO, mission and international-institution people, not laptop people. And mind the clock: UTC+3 means night shifts if your team is in the Americas.

Residential fibre exists in Arusha, but in patches: Njiro, Kijenge, Sekei and the centre are usually covered, while further out (Usa River, newer developments) the answer may simply be \"it doesn't reach\". Typical home plans run ≈US$30–60/month; advertised speeds vary a lot between providers and aren't always delivered — upload is normally the bottleneck for video calls, so ask for a live test before you sign. Mobile 4G is solid across the city and much of the region, and data is cheap: plenty of people keep a 4G router as backup, not as a luxury. The issue is less speed than continuity: TANESCO power cuts are a fact of life, so when viewing a flat ask outright whether there is an inverter, battery or generator, and whether the router is wired into it. A big power bank plus a mobile-data plan B will save your week. If you have non-negotiable meetings, don't rely on a single connection.

CoworkingCoworking

Be honest with yourself: Arusha has nothing like the coworking scene of Nairobi or Cape Town. There is a handful of small spaces, usually attached to entrepreneurship hubs, NGOs, or a hotel renting out rooms, and they open and close easily — I won't hand you names that may already be gone; find them once you land and ask in the expat groups. A realistic monthly rate is ≈US$50–150 for a hot desk, sometimes with meeting-room access, but it varies enough that you should go ask in person. In practice most people work from home, from cafés in the centre and Njiro (Tanzanian coffee is excellent and cheap), or buy a day pass at a hotel with a decent lobby and wifi — the most reliable option when you have calls. Always test the wifi and find the socket before settling in: in many cafés wifi is a courtesy, not infrastructure.

Njiro (and Njiro Hill) is where most foreigners end up: houses and flats with gardens, shopping centres, supermarkets, restaurants and the best odds of fibre; quiet, green and a bit suburban — you'll need a bajaji or a car. Kijenge and Sekei sit closer to the centre, mix local and foreign neighbours, and cost a little less with everything nearer. Themi Hill and Burka/Olasiti are the big-house-with-garden, higher-rent side of town, popular with families and NGO staff. Usa River, some 20–25 km toward Moshi, is the countryside option: green, cool, roomy houses for the money — but without a car you're stranded, and fibre is a lottery. The centre (Clock Tower, Sakina, Levolosi) is cheapest and best connected by transport, but also the noisiest and where you'll be approached on the street most.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is surprisingly easy — just not people like you. Arusha hosts the East African Community plus international courts and institutions, and it's the safari capital: the foreign community is large and settled — NGO staff, missionaries, guides, lodge owners, aid workers — rather than digital nomads. That means dinners, quiz nights, sports clubs, hiking groups heading up Mount Meru, and a lot of social life orbiting known hotels and bars; within three weeks you'll have a calendar. The Spanish-speaking community, though, is tiny: plan on speaking English daily. The street language is Swahili, and while English is enough in tourism and NGO circles, learning the basics (mambo, poa, asante, bei gani) completely changes how you're treated — and what you're charged — at the market and with bajaji drivers.

The one nobody warns you about: landlords typically want 6 to 12 months' rent up front, in cash or transfer. Budget for it, or negotiate quarterly and accept a higher rate. Second, the \"mzungu price\": markets, bajaji and some services run a double tariff for foreigners — ask a local what it should cost before you haggle, and in the centre (Clock Tower, the market) persistent safari touts will approach you; a firm \"hapana, asante\" and keep walking is enough. Don't walk alone at night with your phone and backpack — snatch robberies happen. The long rains from March to May turn streets to mud and slow everything down, with shorter rains around November–December; June to August is chilly with no heating, so bring warm clothes. Power and water cuts are routine — look for a place with a water tank and an inverter. Arusha's altitude means low malaria risk, but the surrounding lowlands (Usa River, safari country) are another story: use repellent and a net. If you arrive from a yellow-fever country, immigration will ask for the certificate. Immigration-wise there is no digital nomad visa: you enter on a tourist e-visa (≈US$50; US citizens pay ≈US$100 for the multiple-entry one) for up to 90 days, and working remotely on a tourist visa is a grey area — don't build a local business on it. Get insurance with medical evacuation: for anything serious, the real answer is a flight to Nairobi. And carry cash and mobile money (M-Pesa, Airtel Money, Mixx): cards are accepted in fewer places than you'd think, and the shilling has been sliding, so check the exchange rate and prices on the spot rather than trusting an old figure.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
