Aprox. 2,698,652 habitantesApprox. 2,698,652 people
Dar es Salaam is Tanzania's largest city and economic engine, though the official capital is Dodoma. It sits on the Indian Ocean, with a natural harbor that made it a Swahili trading center. For travelers it's usually the gateway to Zanzibar (ferries leave from downtown) or the jumping-off point for safaris and Kilimanjaro. It's hot and humid year-round, with vast markets like Kariakoo, city beaches on the Msasani peninsula and a strong blend of Arab, Indian and African cultures.

How much do you need per month in Dar es Salaam?
Dar es Salaam isn't a nomad hub: it's a business, NGO and embassy city on the Indian Ocean — hot, humid, and with traffic that eats your day. It works if you have a real reason to be in East Africa: regional work, safaris, or Zanzibar a couple of hours away by ferry — and if you can handle year-round heat, power cuts and a tiny coworking scene. It doesn't work if you're after "cheap and easy": the expat side of town (Masaki, Oyster Bay) is priced in dollars and costs like a mid-priced European capital, and outside it daily life runs in Swahili.

Home fiber exists and works well in the areas where foreigners live (Masaki, Msasani, Mikocheni, Upanga): plans in the tens of megs for ≈US$35–60 a month, plenty for video calls all day. Upload is usually a lot more modest than download, so if you push heavy files, run a real test before signing anything or booking a whole month. Mobile is the country's strongest layer: decent 4G across most of the city, 5G in some areas, and data bundles are cheap compared to Latin America or Europe. The real problem isn't the line, it's the power: TANESCO outages are recurring and in bad stretches there's been hours-long rationing, so any decent building has a generator or inverter — ask BEFORE you rent, because without backup your router goes down with the city and so does your call. Two practical things: SIM registration in Tanzania is biometric (fingerprint plus passport), done at an official operator shop and it can take a while; and that same SIM is your mobile money (M-Pesa, Airtel Money), which here pays for everything from the daladala to your rent.

The scene is small and skews "local startup / innovation" rather than digital nomad. The known reference point is Buni Innovation Hub, on the COSTECH campus, which works as a tech and events hub more than a photogenic office. Beyond that, the offer changes year to year: spaces open and close in Masaki and Mikocheni, so don't trust an old blog list — find what's actually open the month you arrive and go see it in person (and test the wifi). In practice a lot of people just work from cafés, hotel lobbies and the Msasani peninsula complexes like the Slipway or Sea Cliff Village, where there's wifi, AC and outlets. Budget ≈US$80–150 a month for a fixed desk; otherwise a specialty coffee runs about ≈US$3 and two a day gets you to roughly the same number.
Masaki and Oyster Bay (Msasani peninsula) is where nearly every foreigner lives: ocean nearby, embassies, restaurants, supermarkets with imported goods and private security — also the highest prices in the city, with rents quoted straight in dollars. Msasani, slightly inland on the same peninsula, is the half-step-cheaper version with more everyday life around it. Mikocheni is the sensible pick: residential, modern apartments, 15–25 minutes from Masaki when there's no traffic, for a lot less money. Upanga and Ada Estate sit closer to downtown, leafy and quiet, good if you deal with city-centre offices and don't want the expat circus. Mbezi Beach, up north, is beach and calm but leaves you far from everything the moment traffic seizes up. Kariakoo is the commercial heart and very cheap, but dense and loud, and almost no foreigners live there.
ComunidadCommunity
There's a big foreign community, but it's contract expats: NGOs, aid agencies, embassies, mining, gas and port logistics. That means interesting, well-connected people, though on a different rhythm than the 28-year-old nomad — you meet them at dinners, at the Msasani peninsula sports and sailing clubs, at tech-hub events, and in the "expats in Dar" Facebook and WhatsApp groups, which here are still the real channel. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent, don't count on it. Daily life runs in Swahili; in Masaki, offices and hotels, English is fine, but at the market, on a daladala or with your landlord, Swahili changes everything — learn greetings, numbers and how to haggle, and the city opens up. Tanzanians have a well-earned reputation for being kind and patient with anyone who tries.
Three things that can break your plan. Rent is paid up front: in Tanzania it's completely normal for a landlord to ask for 6 or even 12 months at once, often in cash or dollars — arriving with a month-to-month budget doesn't work, which is why many people start in an Airbnb or serviced apartment while they negotiate. Malaria: Dar is a coastal zone with year-round transmission; use repellent and a net, and talk to a doctor before you come about prophylaxis and about the yellow fever certificate, which is required if you arrive from a country considered endemic. There's no digital nomad visa: you come in on a tourist visa through the e-visa portal (usually up to 90 days; US citizens have their own category and fee) and remote work sits in the usual grey zone — in-country extensions are bureaucratic, so plan your exits. Also: March to May brings the long rains and the city genuinely floods — roads cut, traffic impossible; heat and humidity are constant and AC isn't a luxury, it's a budget line; traffic can turn 8 km into an hour, so live near wherever you'll actually be; on safety, the usual big-city rules, don't walk at night with your phone out and be careful at Coco Beach after sunset; and skip the bodabodas (motorcycle taxis) — they're the fastest route to a hospital. If you're crossing to Zanzibar, check the entry requirements first: they recently added mandatory travel insurance for visitors and the conditions keep shifting. Imported groceries cost European prices: eat local and you save a fortune.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
