It's famous as one of the coldest inhabited cities on Earth: in deep winter temperatures plunge far below -40 °C, and the whole city is built on permafrost, its buildings raised on stilts so as not to melt the frozen ground. It runs on Yakutia's diamonds and gold. It's a remote place, with a strong Yakut (Turkic) identity and an extreme continental climate like few others.
