Clima continental duro: inviernos larguísimos bajo cero, veranos cortos y verdes. Es cara para los estándares rusos y el idioma es una barrera real (poco inglés, alfabeto cirílico).Moscow is huge, monumental and more orderly than you'd expect. Red Square, with St Basil's onion domes and the Kremlin walls, is the heart of it, but the real city lives in the metro —stations built like palaces— and the boulevard rings around the old core. Harsh continental climate: long sub-zero winters, short green summers. It's expensive by Russian standards, and the language is a genuine barrier (little English, Cyrillic alphabet).
Mejor épocaBest time
May to September, when it's warm and light lasts late. December-January is photogenic under snow but brutally cold (well below zero) with very short days.
PresupuestoBudget
Mid-to-high for Russia. The metro and canteen food (stolovaya) are cheap; central hotels and trendy restaurants add up fast.
EntradaEntry
The metro solves everything: fast, cheap and a sight in itself (Komsomolskaya, Mayakovskaya). Download a map with transliterated names —signage is Cyrillic.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living
¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Moscú?How much do you need per month in Moscú?
Moscow doesn't work as a nomad base, and not because of street danger — it's one of the most orderly, easy-to-live-in megacities on earth day to day. The problem is structural: sanctions leave you with no working foreign card, no banking, no valid travel insurance and no direct flight from Europe or the Americas, and Russian law punishes things (an opinion about the war, being visibly LGBT) that wouldn't even cross your mind elsewhere. Who actually lives there now: Russian-speaking diaspora, people married to Russians, the embassy and mission staff that remain, students at RUDN or HSE, and Chinese, Indian, Turkish and Central Asian business. There is no Western remote-work scene — it emptied out in 2022 and never came back. The numbers below are real and surprisingly cheap, but they're the cost of living there, not an invitation to try — and note they're converted from rubles: the exchange rate swings enough that the same rent can look 25-30% cheaper or dearer in dollars from one year to the next.

Russian internet is fast and absurdly cheap: several hundred Mbps of fiber for ≈US$7-12 a month, mobile with near-unlimited data for ≈US$5-10, and full 4G coverage throughout the metro (5G basically doesn't exist — it was never rolled out). That's the good part. The bad part is that it isn't open internet: YouTube has been throttled since 2024 to the point of being nearly unusable, Instagram and Facebook are banned, X is blocked, voice calls over WhatsApp and Telegram have been restricted, and WhatsApp was degraded toward outright blocking, pushing everyone onto the state messenger. VPNs get killed one by one because network-level filtering detects and cuts them, and even advertising one is an offense. Add the rolling mobile-data blackouts during drone alerts — sometimes hours, with no warning, and that's you with no Yandex Go, no maps and no payments — plus the "cooling-off" rule that leaves foreign roaming SIMs without data for several hours after you enter the country. Always work off home fiber and keep a plan B, because your video call depends on there being no alert that day.
CoworkingCoworking
There is a real scene here, but it's domestic and in Russian: Moscow has dozens of good coworking spaces, with well-established local chains like SOK and Workki and premium options such as Space 1; the international chains pulled out in 2022. There's also a city-subsidized coworking network for entrepreneurs, cheaper than the private ones, though the terms shift and it's worth confirming on arrival. A dedicated desk runs ≈US$180 to ≈US$350 a month depending on the district; a flex or day pass costs considerably less. On top of that, the café-with-a-plug culture is very developed and decent wifi is nearly everywhere. The practical catch: signing up for a monthly plan usually means a Russian card and sometimes a contract, so coworking depends on you solving the banking problem first, not the other way around.
Khamovniki and Frunzenskaya is the classic foreigner district if you have the budget: green, quiet, next to Novodevichy and several embassies, walking distance to Gorky Park. Patriarshiye Prudy (Patriki) and the surrounding Tverskoy is the pretty café-and-restaurant neighborhood everyone wants to live in, which is exactly why it costs what it costs. Presnensky, up against Moscow City, is the corporate corridor of towers and serviced apartments — practical if you came for a job rather than for the city. And Kutuzovsky-Dorogomilovo is the long-standing diplomatic axis, with the compounds that housed the foreign corps for decades — noticeably emptier now than before 2022, as are the gated expat developments out on the edge like Rosinka or Pokrovsky Hills.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreign community that existed until 2022 largely left and never came back: the Western expat groups went quiet or shrank to sparse Telegram chats. What's left today is reduced embassies and missions, international students at RUDN and HSE (many from Africa, Asia and Latin America), Chinese, Indian and Turkish business communities, people married to Russians, and a huge Central Asian working population living in a parallel Moscow you won't enter. Young Muscovites are curious and genuinely hospitable once the ice breaks, but the ice is real: outside the young professional circle English is limited, and without functional Russian and the ability to read Cyrillic your social life shrinks to nothing. Budget months, not weeks, to build a circle. And keep in mind that talking politics, even privately, exposes both you and whoever is listening.
The first thing that wrecks the plan is money: your foreign Visa or Mastercard does not work in Russia — not at ATMs, not in shops — and Apple Pay and Google Pay are dead too. You arrive with cash in dollars or euros (declare above US$10,000) and live off it until you get a Mir card, which requires a Russian bank, an INN and paperwork — and which a foreigner is sometimes simply refused. Second, getting in: almost no nationality enters without a visa arranged in advance — there's a short-stay e-visa for a number of countries, but nothing resembling a digital nomad visa, and settling in on a tourist visa is exactly the kind of improvisation you don't want to try here. Third, migration registration (registratsiya): you must be registered with the authorities within a few working days of arrival; a hotel does it for you, but in a private rental it depends on the landlord registering you, and many won't — without it you risk a fine and trouble on the way out. Fourth, insurance: most international policies exclude Russia or are voided by sanctions, so private healthcare comes out of your pocket or via a local Russian DMS policy. Fifth, and most serious: the legal risk is not theoretical. There are laws on "discrediting the armed forces", the LGBT movement has been designated "extremist" since 2023, and several Western governments advise against travel outright over the risk of arbitrary detention; having your phone checked at the border is routine. If you hold Russian citizenship or are entitled to it, add that Russia won't treat you as a foreigner and you're exposed to military obligations. And always keep the exit solved: there are no direct flights from the EU or the US — you leave via Istanbul, Dubai, Yerevan, Belgrade or Astana, on a ticket bought from outside and paid with a card that actually works. Also, the winter: in December the sun comes up after nine and sets before five, with weeks at −10 to −20 °C.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
