Aprox. 5,028,000 habitantesApprox. 5,028,000 people
Saint Petersburg is Russia's former imperial capital, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 on the marshes of the Neva delta. It's a city of Baroque and Neoclassical facades, palaces, canals and bridges that earned it the nickname "Venice of the North." Here stands the Hermitage, one of the world's largest museums, inside the tsars' Winter Palace. In June and July come the white nights, when it barely gets dark and the city never sleeps.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en San Petersburgo? How much do you need per month in San Petersburgo?
Saint Petersburg is still one of the cheapest places in Europe to live decently: a solid flat near the historic center, absurdly fast and cheap fiber, food and transport priced like another decade. Money isn't the problem — everything else is: your foreign card works nowhere, migration registration is mandatory, mobile internet gets cut, and almost no nomad insurance covers Russia. It works if you already speak some Russian or have local contacts and can take a winter with five hours of daylight; it doesn't work if you plan to land, tap Apple Pay and handle everything in English.

Home internet here is among the best value you'll find anywhere: 100-500 Mbps fiber for ≈US$8 a month, stable, symmetric on many plans, wired into practically every Soviet-era building. Video calls are a non-issue. City 4G/5G is fast and cheap, but here's the ugly part: since 2024-2025 mobile internet gets throttled or shut off fairly often for security reasons — it can last hours with no warning — so never make your phone your only work connection. YouTube crawls or won't load without a VPN, voice calls over WhatsApp and Telegram have been restricted since 2025 (don't assume a messenger call will connect), and plenty of Western services are blocked or block you for having a Russian IP: banks, payment platforms, some cloud tools. Nearly everyone uses a VPN; the rules around that tighten every year, so check the current situation before you go. Getting a Russian SIM needs your passport, migration registration and, for foreigners, biometric registration — not a five-minute errand.
CoworkingCoworking
There's a real coworking scene, but it's a local one: Russian, in Russian, full of homegrown freelancers and startup people rather than foreign nomads. You'll find everything from chain spaces to lofts in converted factories — the Ligovsky Prospekt corridor, home to Loft Project Etazhi, holds several — plus dirt-cheap coworking inside libraries and cultural centers. A hot desk runs ≈US$100-160 a month, a dedicated office noticeably more. Spaces open and close often, so confirm the one you picked is still running before you pay for a full month. Watch the payment side: many won't take a foreign card, so you'll need a Mir card or a local transfer. The realistic and very common alternative is café work: Saint Petersburg has a huge specialty coffee culture, decent wifi and outlets, around ≈US$3 a flat white.
Vasilievsky Island (Vasileostrovsky) is the closest thing to an international neighborhood: the state university and several faculties bring in foreign students, it's a step from the center, and rents are a bit gentler. Petrogradskaya storona is the pretty, quiet district chosen by those who can pay for it: art nouveau, parks, cafés, good metro links. The center (Admiralteysky and the Rubinstein–Ligovsky axis) is for people who want everything on foot, with the price and noise that implies. And Moskovsky, along Moskovsky Prospekt toward Park Pobedy, is the practical pick: newer, better-kept buildings, a direct metro line, rent well below the center.
ComunidadCommunity
The foreign community shrank dramatically after 2022: corporate expats left and didn't come back. What remains is international students (the state university, ITMO, Polytech), migrants from Central Asia and the Caucasus, and a handful of remote workers from Latin America, the Middle East, India and China. There is a Spanish-speaking community, but it's small and lives in Telegram chats rather than public meetups. Daily life runs in Russian and only Russian: outside central cafés and hotels almost nobody speaks English, and you need to read Cyrillic to survive the supermarket, the metro and any paperwork. That said, it's a very sociable city once you're in: the cultural life is enormous — concerts, theater, exhibitions, the Rubinstein bar scene — and people are genuinely hospitable once the ice breaks. Without some Russian you'll live comfortably but alone.
Money is the real wall: your foreign Visa/Mastercard does not work in Russia, not at ATMs, not in shops, and neither do Apple Pay or Google Pay. You either arrive with cash (dollars or euros, exchanged locally) or you get a Russian account and Mir card, which takes an INN, migration registration and patience — and not every bank opens accounts for foreigners. Second: migration registration is mandatory within days of arrival and your host has to file it — plenty of informal landlords refuse, so settle that BEFORE you sign — and carry your passport, migration card and registration at all times, document checks are a thing. Third: almost no international travel or nomad insurance covers Russia because of sanctions, so get that confirmed in writing before you rely on one, and your foreign subscriptions and payments may simply fail from a Russian IP. Fourth: every figure here is converted from rubles and the exchange rate swings hard; a year from now the same life can cost 15% more or less in dollars with nothing changing on the ground. Fifth: the winter is genuinely hard, December gives you about five hours of gray light with rain or snow most days, and a lot of people struggle with it; in exchange June's white nights go a long way toward making up for it. Sixth, on visas: several Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador) get 90 days visa-free, but Mexico and Spain are not in that group and need a visa or e-visa; the rules shift, so confirm with the consulate, not a blog. And finally, without drama but without lying to you: this is a country at war, with limited flights that almost always route through Istanbul, Dubai or Yerevan, and Pulkovo closes without warning on drone alerts; speech laws are very restrictive too, including the designation of the "international LGBT movement" as extremist, which is a real legal risk if that applies to you. Come only if you understand and accept that context.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person.
