It was founded in 1784 as a Russian fortress guarding the start of the Georgian Military Road, the historic route across the mountains into Georgia. It's a multi-ethnic, multi-faith city, the heart of Ossetian culture, with the snowy Caucasus peaks rising at the end of its avenues. Its cuisine, above all the famous Ossetian pies, is reason enough to visit.
