Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania and boasts one of Eastern Europe's largest and best-preserved Baroque old towns, a World Heritage Site. It's a manageable, green city crossed by the Neris and Vilnia rivers, with a relaxed, bohemian feel and prices still gentle for the EU. It blends the weight of its history — it was a great centre of European Jewry, the 'Jerusalem of the North' — with young energy, cafés, street art and the quirky self-declared bohemian republic of Užupis. Comfortable, cheap and uncrowded, it's one of the most likeable Baltic capitals.

May to September is best: long days, terraces and greenery. Winter is long, dark and cold with snow; it has festive charm but demands serious layers.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Vilnius? How much do you need per month in Vilnius?

Vilnius works really well if you're in tech, actually care about fast internet, and want a safe, compact, good-looking European capital for a lot less than Western Europe. It doesn't work if you can't handle cold and darkness: from November to March it gets dark mid-afternoon, and that breaks a lot of people. It's also no longer the bargain it was a few years ago — post-2022 inflation plus thousands of relocated newcomers pushed rents up noticeably. Everything is priced in euros, so the dollar figures below move with the exchange rate.

This is Vilnius's genuine strong suit: Lithuania has ranked for years among Europe's best countries for fixed broadband and fiber penetration. Fiber reaches almost the entire apartment stock, Soviet-era blocks included, and 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps runs ≈US$15–25/month with providers like Telia, Bitė or Tele2. It's real fiber, symmetric on many plans, stable, with no blackouts or chronic outages — and no censorship or need for a VPN. Mobile is very good too: excellent 4G across the city and out toward Trakai or Kaunas, 5G in much of Vilnius, and cheap data. Cafés generally have decent wifi. If your job is video calls all day, you won't suffer here.

CoworkingCoworking

The scene is small but serious, and it's wired into the fintech ecosystem: Lithuania is one of the EU's biggest fintech licensing hubs, so the spaces are full of people actually building product, not laptop tourists. The landmarks are Vilnius Tech Park (in the Sapieha palace complex, startup-heavy) and Rockit, the fintech hub by the river; there are also international flex-office operators in the Šnipiškės business centers, plus several boutique spaces in Naujamiestis. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$150–250; a small private office costs considerably more. Heads up: most places cut hours on weekends, and many function more as local startup communities than drop-in coworking — do a trial day before paying for a month.

Si prefieres edificio nuevo con elevador y buen aislamiento (relevante en enero), mira Paupys —desarrollo moderno junto a Užupis— o los edificios altos de Šnipiškės, la zona de negocios al otro lado del Neris.Užupis is the obvious favorite among creatives and foreigners: the bohemian "republic" just across a small bridge from the Old Town, with artist studios, galleries and the Vilnelė river. Pretty and walkable, but steep streets and old buildings (check the heating). Senamiestis (Old Town) is gorgeous and everything is on foot, though you pay a premium, the apartments are old, and summer brings terrace and tourist noise. Naujamiestis, around Gedimino avenue and toward the station, is the best value for nomads: gentrifying fast, with the best specialty coffee and bar scene and more reasonable rents than the historic core. Žvėrynas is the quiet pick: a residential neighborhood of wooden houses and tree-lined streets across the river, about 15-20 minutes' walk from the center, popular with foreigners who want calm. If you'd rather have a new building with an elevator and proper insulation (which matters in January), look at Paupys — a modern development next to Užupis — or the towers in Šnipiškės, the business district across the Neris.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people is easier than the city's size suggests, but it runs almost entirely through the tech ecosystem and international students. There are frequent meetups on fintech, product, startups and data, nearly all in English, and they're the most direct route to making friends. English among Lithuanians under 40 is very good — you won't need Lithuanian day to day, though learning a few words goes a long way because almost no foreigner tries. Many older people understand Russian. The Spanish-speaking community exists but is small (Spanish Erasmus students, some Latin Americans in tech); don't count on finding a ready-made Spanish-speaking crowd. The surprise factor is social seasonality: in winter life moves indoors and it's harder to break the ice, and the moment May arrives the whole city spills onto terraces and into the parks and everyone turns sociable overnight.

First: the visa. Lithuania is in Schengen and has no digital nomad visa (Estonia does, Lithuania doesn't). If you enter visa-free, the 90/180 Schengen rule applies across the whole zone — and those 90 days vanish fast if you already spent time in Spain or Portugal. Map out your calendar before signing a lease. Second: winter. It's not just the cold (January averages around −3 °C, but cold snaps go well below that); it's the darkness — in late December the sun sets around 4 pm and there are entire gray weeks. Plenty of people leave in January and come back in April, and that's a perfectly sensible strategy. Third: heating isn't included. Rents are advertised without utilities, and in an old poorly insulated building the January bill can be double or triple what you pay in summer; always ask what last winter's heating cost before you sign. Fourth: the rental market. Aruodas.lt is where nearly all the listings live, many landlords want a 12-month contract plus one month's deposit, and short furnished rentals carry a premium — if you're staying three months, expect to pay above the figures above. And one honest note: the city is very safe (violent crime is rare, walking at night is fine) but it sits about 30 km from the Belarusian border, and regional geopolitical tension is a real topic of local conversation — for some people it's a non-issue, for others it isn't; decide with information, not panic.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
