Šiauliai

Aprox. 130,587 habitantesApprox. 130,587 people

The sun is its emblem: its main square holds a huge sundial crowned by a golden archer statue, and Vilniaus Street was one of the first pedestrian streets in the former Soviet Union. But what puts it on the map is just outside town: the Hill of Crosses, a mound covered by hundreds of thousands of crucifixes, one of Europe's most striking pilgrimage sites.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Šiauliai? How much do you need per month in Šiauliai?

Frame it honestly, though: cheap by Western-EU standards, but Bulgaria, Romania or Albania are still cheaper — what you're buying here is stability, safety and Schengen under your feet, not the lowest price on the continent. It does not work if you want a nomad scene: there is no nomad community here, almost nobody speaks Spanish, and winter is long and very dark. This is a shrinking industrial city, not a hub. Everything is priced in euros, so the USD figures move with the exchange rate.

The best thing about the city. Lithuania ranks among the world's best for fiber speed and value, and Šiauliai is well covered: 300 Mbps to 1 Gbps fiber for ≈US$12–25 a month, quick install, rock-solid connection, with Telia, Bitė and Tele2 competing (plus local cable ISPs). Mobile is cheap with plenty of data, and there's 5G across much of the city. Power cuts and network outages aren't a real issue here. One thing to check: in older Soviet-era blocks the in-building wiring can be the bottleneck, so ask whether fiber actually reaches the apartment door or only coax — and whether the internet contract is already active or you have to sign one up yourself (usually 12 or 24 months).

CoworkingCoworking

Minimal scene, and I'll say it plainly: Šiauliai has nothing like the coworking ecosystem of Vilnius or Kaunas. There are spaces tied to the city's business incubator and to the university campus (the old Šiauliai University is now Vilnius University's Šiauliai Academy), and small independent spots open and close from time to time — don't bet your move on a specific name, check on arrival. If you find one, budget ≈US$80–130 a month. In practice almost everyone works from home (that's what the fiber is for) and uses downtown cafés and the public library. If a coworking with an actual social life is non-negotiable, this isn't your city — Vilnius is about three hours away.

Centras (downtown, around the Vilniaus gatvė pedestrian street) is where you want to be: everything on foot, the cafés, the market and the buildings in the best shape. Lieporiai and Dainai are residential Soviet-block districts, cheaper and quieter, well served by buses — that's where most people live. Zokniai is the area by the airport and the air base where NATO's air-policing detachment rotates through, though that personnel mostly lives on base and changes every few months — it isn't a settled expat community. Rėkyva, by the lake of the same name, is greener and further out, good if you want nature and don't mind relying on the bus. Almost all rental stock is listed in Lithuanian on local portals (Aruodas is the main one); the market is small and short-term furnished places are scarce.

ComunidadCommunity

Hard, and it's fair to say so. There's no nomad community and no remote-work meetups; the closest thing to an international scene is the university students and the NATO personnel at the air base — two fairly closed worlds, and the latter rotates out every few months. The Spanish-speaking community is essentially nonexistent. Daily life runs in Lithuanian; under-35s usually have good English, many older people understand Russian, and English can fail you at public offices, at the doctor or when renting. Lithuanians are friendly but reserved: making friends takes months, not weeks. If you arrive alone with no social plan, you will feel isolated — especially in winter.

Winter. In December you get around seven hours of daylight, grey skies most days, weeks below freezing, and a city that turns inward. If you're prone to seasonal slumps this will hit you for real — come prepared (light lamp, vitamin D, a routine that gets you out of the flat). Second, the cost of cold: district heating is billed separately and in January it can double or triple your utility bill — ALWAYS ask what the previous tenant paid in January before signing, and expect a one-month deposit and leases written for a year. Third: the city has been losing population for decades, so don't expect nightlife, food variety or local opportunities; and for flying out, Šiauliai's airport has almost no passenger service — your real exit is a bus or train to Vilnius or Kaunas (about 2–3 hours) or a bus to Riga (about 2.5–3 hours). On immigration: Lithuania has no digital nomad visa, unlike Estonia or Latvia. If you're not an EU citizen you either live on Schengen's 90-in-180 or look into the temporary residence permit for self-employment/individual activity, which is serious paperwork in Lithuanian. Confirm it with the Migration Department before you buy a ticket.
