Kaunas

Aprox. 374,643 habitantesApprox. 374,643 people

Kaunas is Lithuania's second city and served as its provisional capital between the world wars, when Vilnius was under Polish control. That era left its most distinctive mark: a body of 1920s–30s modernist architecture inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It sits at the confluence of the country's two great rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, with a medieval old town at one end and the long pedestrian avenue Laisvės alėja as its spine. It was European Capital of Culture in 2022. Cheaper and less touristy than Vilnius, it has a university buzz and a growing café and art scene.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Kaunas? How much do you need per month in Kaunas?

Kaunas works if you want a cheap European base with excellent internet and a compact city you can walk end to end, and you don't mind a quiet social life. It's clearly cheaper than Vilnius and far cheaper than Western Europe, but the nomad scene is small: you come here to work and save, not to network. It doesn't work if you need sun, a big Spanish-speaking crowd, or mild winters — November through March is genuinely cold and dark by late afternoon.

This is Lithuania's strong suit: home fiber is among the best and cheapest in Europe. Plans in the 300 Mbps–1 Gbps range for ≈US$13–20/month are normal (upload is usually generous, often symmetric depending on the operator), and apartment buildings are typically already wired, so installation is quick. Reliability is high — no scheduled blackouts, no chronic outages — and faults tend to get fixed fast. Mobile 4G/5G coverage is excellent across the city and on the road, with generous data plans for very little. If your job is video calls all day, you won't suffer here.

CoworkingCoworking

There is a scene, but it's small and tied to the university and startup world: Kaunas is an engineering town (KTU) with innovation hubs and shared spaces connected to that ecosystem, plus private shared offices downtown. Don't expect Vilnius's volume or its international vibe, and don't count on finding a big-name global chain here. A flex desk runs roughly ≈US$110–180/month; a small private office costs considerably more. Very real plan B: specialty cafés downtown and in Žaliakalnis have good wifi and nobody minds you working there — and plenty of nomads end up working from home simply because the apartment fiber beats any coworking.

Naujamiestis (New Town) is the obvious pick: it's the real center, built around Laisvės Avenue, with cafés, supermarkets and everything on foot; handsome interwar buildings and the widest choice of furnished rentals. Senamiestis (Old Town), where the Nemunas and the Neris meet, is beautiful and very walkable, but the housing stock is older and there are fewer listings. Žaliakalnis, the green hill you can reach by funicular, is quiet and residential, with wooden houses and gardens — the favorite for people who want silence without leaving the city. Šančiai, along the river, is the district in transition: cheaper, more alternative, with a growing studio-and-workshop crowd. Soviet-block districts like Šilainiai, Dainava or Eiguliai are the cheapest and perfectly functional, but they're away from the atmosphere and you'll depend on the trolleybus.

ComunidadCommunity

Meeting people takes more effort than in a classic nomad hub. What Kaunas does have is a big international student population — KTU, Vytautas Magnus and especially the health sciences university (LSMU) pull in a lot of foreigners, including Spanish and Latin American students — so there is a Spanish-speaking crowd, but it's young and rotates every year. Under-40s generally speak good English and are friendly once past an initially reserved first impression; day-to-day life runs in Lithuanian, and Kaunas is the most Lithuanian-speaking of the big cities (you'll hear far less Russian here than in Vilnius). There are tech and startup meetups, cultural events and a genuinely good café culture, but the social pace is slow: friendships get built gradually through activities (gym, climbing, choirs, sauna, running) rather than nightlife.

Winter is the real filter: November to March means sub-zero cold, snow and above all very little daylight — in December it's dark around 4pm, and a lot of foreigners struggle their first year. Budget heating separately: in older buildings the winter bill can double or triple the summer one, and it's the expense that catches people off guard. Lithuania uses the euro, so there's no exchange-rate game to play and no cash-only workarounds — cards work everywhere. If you're not an EU citizen, watch the visa side: Lithuania is in Schengen, so your 90/180 runs out with no hopping to a neighboring country — you need an actual residence permit, and the rules change, so confirm with the Migration Department (Migracijos departamentas) before committing to a lease. Landlords usually want one or two months' deposit and six-to-twelve-month contracts; short furnished rentals exist but cost more. The city is safe, including at night, so that's not the concern. And yes, the region lives with Belarus and Kaliningrad nearby and the war in Ukraine in the background: it doesn't make daily life dangerous, but it's worth looking at honestly before committing to a year here.
