Its eastern tip, the Strelka, is one of the city's signature views: the Rostral Columns and the former Stock Exchange face the Winter Palace across the river. The island was laid out as a grid, and many of its streets are numbered "lines" (linii) rather than named. Here you'll find the State University, the Kunstkamera and the Egyptian sphinxes on the university embankment.
