It was an important city under the Mongol Ilkhanids in the 14th century, and from that era it keeps its jewel: the Friday Mosque, one of the landmark works of medieval Persian architecture. Today it's a provincial town and one of Tehran's breadbaskets, an easy day trip from the capital for anyone chasing heritage without the crowds.
