El paisaje es de altiplano seco, lago salino inmenso y montañas nevadas; el ambiente, mucho más provinciano y auténtico que el Egeo turístico.Van sits on the shore of Lake Van, Turkey's largest lake, on the high plateau of far-eastern Anatolia, around 1,700 metres above sea level and close to the Iranian border. It's a Kurdish city with a strong identity of its own: this is the home of the famous Van cat—white and often with two differently coloured eyes—and of the Van breakfast (kahvaltı), a vast spread of cheeses, honeys and kaymak. The landscape is dry highland, a huge salt lake and snow-capped mountains; the feel is far more provincial and genuine than the touristy Aegean.
