Bursa is the first major Ottoman capital, spread below Mount Uludağ among mosques, silk markets, baths and green districts. In Heykel, the civic center around the Atatürk statue, close to the Grand Mosque and bazaars. Ulu Cami provides another concrete reference: a twenty-domed great mosque completed in 1399, with celebrated interior calligraphy. The center preserves sultans’ tombs while a cable car connects that urban history with the mountain.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Bursa? How much do you need per month in Bursa?
Bursa works for you if you want Turkey cheap, green and well-organized without Istanbul's chaos or prices: it's a genuinely big city (over two million), with a mountain (Uludağ) next door, thermal baths, serious food, and a ferry to Istanbul in a couple of hours. It doesn't work if you want an international nomad scene, because there basically isn't one: you'll work alone, daily life happens in Turkish, and English runs out past the university and the malls. And watch the currency: the lira moves so much that any dollar figure ages fast — treat these as ballpark, not fixed prices, and confirm everything once you land.

Set your expectations: Turkey's fixed broadband is slower than the European average. Fiber exists and works — Türk Telekom and Turkcell Superonline cover Nilüfer and newer buildings well — but a typical home plan lands around 50-100 Mbps down, with noticeably lower upload, so if you're on video calls all day ask specifically about upload. In older buildings in Osmangazi and Yıldırım you may only get 16-35 Mbps VDSL: ask about the connection BEFORE signing the lease, not after. Getting a line in your own name usually means a Turkish ID number (foreigner or tax) and a 12-24 month commitment; most people end up using whatever the furnished apartment already has. Mobile 4.5G is genuinely good and covers the whole city; 5G is only just starting in Turkey, so don't count on it yet. The real problem isn't speed, it's blocking: Turkey throttles social networks after certain events and has blocked entire services (Discord among them). Have a paid VPN installed before you land, and don't let your work depend on a single platform.
CoworkingCoworking
Escena chica y local, no internacional. Small, local scene — not an international one. What exists revolves around the city's tech ecosystem — the ULUTEK technopark next to Uludağ University, and incubators tied to the chamber of commerce and industry — but that's built for Turkish companies and startups, not for selling single desks to passing foreigners. Beyond that there's a handful of private offices renting desks by the month, almost all in Nilüfer. I'm deliberately not handing you brand names: they open and close fast and I don't want to send you to a dead address — search Google Maps for "ortak çalışma alanı" or "coworking Bursa" a week before you arrive, and call to confirm. Expect something like ≈US$70-150/month for a hot desk, though it varies. The practical truth is that most freelancers in Bursa work from cafés: Nilüfer (Özlüce, Beşevler, the Fatih Sultan Mehmet boulevard area) has big cafés with wifi and outlets where nobody will rush you out, and malls like Korupark work as an air-conditioned backup office.
Nilüfer is the short answer: Bursa's modern, planned, most secular and most comfortable district — newer buildings with fiber, cafés, gyms, supermarkets and the best malls. Within Nilüfer, aim for Özlüce, Beşevler, İhsaniye or the Fatih Sultan Mehmet boulevard area. Görükle sits next to the Uludağ University campus: this is where rent genuinely drops, with young energy and cheap food, but it's far from the center and empties out in summer when the students leave. Çekirge, in Osmangazi, is the old thermal quarter: green, quiet, with hot-spring hotels and close to the historic center — good if you want calm and don't mind older buildings. And Mudanya, about 30 km out, sits on the Sea of Marmara with a fast ferry to Istanbul: pretty and serene, the "I live by the sea" option if you accept depending on a car or bus to get into the city.
ComunidadCommunity
Be honest with yourself: there is no nomad community here. Bursa's foreign presence is the international students at Uludağ University (Arab, Central Asian, African), the Syrian community, and Arab families who bought apartments in Nilüfer and Mudanya. Spanish speakers: near zero. Remote-worker meetups: essentially none — for that you take the ferry to Istanbul, a couple of hours away, where a real scene exists. English works with younger people, at the university, in hotels and malls; beyond that daily life is entirely in Turkish. The good news is that Turkish hospitality is real, not a brochure line: learn the basics of the language (a few weeks of actual lessons or serious app time) and you get invited into homes, dinners and real friendships. Without Turkish, Bursa will feel lonely.
Four things a friend would tell you before you book the ticket. One, the currency. The lira has had years of high inflation: rents get renegotiated upward every year and these dollar figures can go stale within months. Earning in dollars or euros is a big advantage here, but don't sign anything assuming today's price is next year's — and don't assume "Turkey is dirt cheap": in dollar terms it has gotten a lot more expensive. Two, your phone. Turkey registers IMEIs: a phone bought abroad stops working with a Turkish SIM after a few months unless you pay the registration fee, which is repriced every year and has reached the order of a thousand dollars. Plenty of people dodge it with an eSIM or foreign roaming — check the current figure before you come, because it stings. Three, the residence permit (ikamet). Turkey closes neighborhoods to new foreign registration once the share of foreigners passes the cap; confirm that the exact address allows registration BEFORE you sign a lease, or you'll have an apartment and no permit. If you're only coming as a tourist, many passports get 90 days within 180 and Turkey does enforce it — don't plan on "leaving and coming back" to reset. Four, the lease and the building. Contracts run 12 months, with a deposit and often an agent fee, and foreigners are sometimes asked for a Turkish guarantor or several months up front. Also ask the building's construction year: Bursa sits in a serious earthquake zone near the North Anatolian fault, and asking about the year and earthquake-code compliance isn't paranoia here, it's standard. Smaller but real: winters are cold, damp and grey and gas heating is expensive; traffic is heavy; and the city is noticeably more conservative than Istanbul or Izmir, with limited nightlife and heavily taxed alcohol.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
