Ulsan
Aprox. 962,865 habitantesApprox. 962,865 people
Ulsan is South Korea's industrial capital: home to the world's largest shipyard and the planet's biggest car plant, both Hyundai's, which effectively built the modern city. It sits in the country's southeast corner on the East Sea (Sea of Japan), and it's no obvious tourist stop, but it has a whaling past, a clean river with a bamboo forest right downtown, and a cape where the sun rises earlier than anywhere else on mainland Korea.
Mejor épocaBest time
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) are best: mild and dry. Summer is hot, humid and brings typhoons; winter is cold but sunny.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Ulsan? How much do you need per month in Ulsan?
Ulsan is a genuinely industrial city — the Hyundai Motor plant, the HD Hyundai Heavy shipyard, SK's refinery in Onsan — not a nomad hub. It works if you want a cheap Korean base compared to Seoul, with first-world internet, very high safety, the sea nearby and Busan an hour away. It doesn't work if you depend on a remote-work scene: there's no nomad community here, hardly anyone speaks English outside the English-teacher circle, there's no metro, and air quality near the petrochemical complexes is a real issue. Add that renting in Korea demands a big deposit up front, and that the Korean nomad visa filters hard by income.

Korea plays in another league here: 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps home fiber for ≈US$25-35 a month, rock stable, very low latency, no outages. 5G coverage is excellent across the city, and an MVNO plan (알뜰폰) with plenty of data runs ≈US$12-25. The two catches are contractual, not technical: the big carriers push 3-year contracts with early-exit penalties, and they normally want an ARC (foreign resident card) to sign. If you're here for a few months, your realistic plan is a place with internet already included, or living off mobile hotspot — more than enough for video calls. There's no censorship or blocking that affects your work; the one friction is Korean banking and admin sites that still demand verification through a Korean mobile number.
CoworkingCoworking
Be honest with yourself: the private coworking scene in Ulsan is close to nonexistent. What exists are public startup-support centers (창업지원센터, city-run spaces and University of Ulsan facilities) that usually require being in a program or having a Korea-registered business — not renting a desk to a passing foreigner. The real workspace here is the café: Korea has a café-as-office culture with outlets, wifi and nobody rushing you, and Samsan-dong has dozens. The very Korean alternative is the 스터디카페 (study café): a quiet booth, open 24/7, paid by the hour or with a monthly fixed seat — cheaper than coworking, though not a place to take calls. Budget ≈US$100-150 a month across cafés and a study café instead of a coworking membership; if some private space does turn up, confirm it on the ground before you count on it.
Samsan-dong (Nam-gu) is the real center: restaurants, bars, cafés and the best bus connections — where you want to live if you'll be working outside the house. Dong-gu, especially Bangeojin and Ilsan Beach, is the historic expat area thanks to the HD Hyundai Heavy shipyard: beach, quieter, more cut off from downtown. Mugeo-dong (Nam-gu), next to the University of Ulsan, is the student zone with the cheapest one-rooms and smaller deposits. Seongnam-dong (Jung-gu) is the old downtown by the Taehwa River — cheaper, more Korean, with less English around you.
ComunidadCommunity
Ulsan has a foreign community, but a specific one: English teachers (hagwons and public programs) plus engineers and contractors from the shipyard and petrochemical plants. These aren't nomads — they're people on local contracts, and turnover is high; a batch of teachers leaves every February. They meet around sport and bars: football, hiking, quiz nights, plus long-running Ulsan expat Facebook and KakaoTalk groups. Get into those and you'll know half of them in two weeks. Spanish-speaking community: essentially none — don't count on speaking Spanish. Daily life runs in Korean: in shops, on buses and at any paperwork counter, English fails you far more than in Seoul, so Papago will live on your screen. Busan is the pressure valve when the city starts feeling small: an hour by intercity bus, or the Donghae line commuter train from Taehwagang station to Bujeon.
Three things that can break your plan. One: the money up front. In Korea you rent with a 보증금 (deposit), and in Ulsan that's ≈US$2,000-7,000 in cash before you move in — more the further you want to push the monthly rent down. Plenty of landlords simply won't rent to someone without an ARC, so arrive with a plan B: monthly Airbnb or company housing. Two: the visa and the insurance. Korea does have a "workation" visa for remote workers (F-1-D), but it demands high income — on the order of twice the national income per capita, north of US$60,000 a year — provable experience in your field, and private health insurance with high coverage; on a 90-day tourist entry you're technically not here to work. And if you do end up with an ARC and stay more than six months, national health insurance (NHIS) enrollment is mandatory and adds over ≈US$100 a month to your budget. Confirm current requirements with the consulate before you buy a flight. Three: air and weather. This is a petrochemical and heavy-industry hub; depending on wind and area (near Onsan or the Yeocheon complex) you get industrial smells and bad air days, plus fine dust in spring. Summer is humid and heavy, with rainy season from late June through July and a real typhoon risk from August into early October — Typhoon Chaba flooded Ulsan in 2016. And one big practical detail: there's no metro and the KTX station sits out in Ulju, so everything moves by bus or taxi and the neighborhood you pick defines your daily life.
