Gwangju

Aprox. 1,416,938 habitantesApprox. 1,416,938 people

Gwangju is a southwestern Korean city whose modern identity is tied to the May 1980 democratic uprising and the arts. In Dongmyeong-dong, a former residential area transformed by cafés and small shops near the historic center. May 18th National Cemetery provides another concrete reference: a cemetery and memorial honoring those killed during the 1980 democratic uprising. Political memory, markets and an active biennale offer a different view from Korea’s most visited cities.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Gwangju? How much do you need per month in Gwangju?

Gwangju works if you want Korea without Seoul's price tag: world-class internet, an extremely safe city, outstanding food (Jeolla has a well-earned reputation as the country's best table) and rents roughly 30–50% below the capital. It doesn't work if you need a ready-made nomad scene, English on the street, or easy international flights — the typical foreigner here is an English teacher or a grad student, not a digital nomad. The real filter isn't the monthly cost, it's the Korean rental deposit: you need several thousand dollars in cash before anyone hands you keys.

You won't have problems here, and that's the single best reason to pick Korea. Home fiber runs 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps for ≈US$25–35 a month (₩35,000–50,000), rock solid, no blackouts or scheduled outages. 5G coverage is complete across the city, subway included. Café wifi is fast and genuinely usable for work. Two honest frictions: the bureaucratic one — signing up for fiber or a cheap mobile plan usually requires an ARC (residence card) and contracts tend to run 2–3 years, which is why it pays to rent a one-room with internet already included, as most are; and the fact that Korea DNS-blocks certain site categories (gambling, adult, some piracy) — nothing that gets in the way of work, though plenty of people run a VPN anyway.

CoworkingCoworking

The private coworking scene is thin: Gwangju doesn't run on nomads, so there are few commercial spaces and they don't always last. When you find one, budget ≈US$90–180 (₩130,000–250,000) a month for a flex desk. Two local alternatives work better in practice: cafés, which in Korea are big, outlet-lined and fast, and where nobody pushes you out after four hours; and "study cafés" (스터디카페), silent 24-hour rooms with your own cubicle and a monthly pass around ≈US$70–120 — far cheaper than coworking and ideal if you work alone. The city also has a public innovation and startup center with cheap desks, but the paperwork and rules are usually Korean-only. I'm not giving you coworking names because they turn over fast and I won't send you to a dead address: look them up on Naver Map or Kakao Map once you land (Google Maps is close to useless in Korea).

Sangmu (상무지구), in Seo-gu, is the modern planned district around city hall: offices, newer officetels, restaurants and the tidiest nightlife — it's where most salaried foreigners end up. The area around Chonnam National University (용봉동) is the cheap, young option: small one-rooms, student-priced food, bars open late. Cheomdan (첨단지구), split between Buk-gu and Gwangsan-gu, is the science and tech pole near GIST: newer apartments, quieter, greener, but you'll need patience with transit. And Chungjang-ro (충장로), with Dong-gu's old downtown, holds the city's soul — shopping, cinemas, cafés, the market — in older buildings with lower rents, in exchange for noise.

ComunidadCommunity

Small foreign community, but tight precisely because it's small: English teachers (EPIK and private academies), international grad students from GIST and Chonnam, and factory workers. The Gwangju International Center downtown is the actual meeting point — talks, language exchanges and help with paperwork; it's the first door you should knock on. Spanish-speaking community: essentially nonexistent, don't count on it. Daily life runs in Korean far more than in Seoul — servers, landlords and civil servants rarely speak English, and the Jeolla accent trips up even people who've studied the language. In exchange, locals have a well-earned reputation for warmth: make an effort with the language and you get adopted fast.

The deposit is the punch nobody warns you about: Korea's wolse system asks for several million won (≈US$2,000–7,000) in cash upfront on top of monthly rent, and without an ARC and a Korean bank account many landlords won't even meet you. When you sign, ask for the 등기부등본 (property registry) to see whether the place is mortgaged, and file your 전입신고 and 확정일자 at the district office — that's what legally protects your deposit, and deposit fraud (mostly on jeonse contracts) was a national scandal recently. On visas: Korea opened a digital nomad visa (F-1-D) in 2024, but it demands a high income — on the order of US$60,000 a year — broad health insurance and provable experience in your field; confirm at the consulate before counting on it, since the requirements move. Many Latin American passports get 90 days visa-free (with K-ETA where it applies), but not all — check yours, and be clear that working on that status isn't legal. The weather punishes at both ends: July and August run 30–35°C with brutal humidity and the monsoon (장마), winter is milder than Seoul's but brings heavy snow blowing in off the Yellow Sea, and from March to May fine dust (미세먼지) means a mask on plenty of days. And the flight logistics: Gwangju's airport is basically domestic-only and Muan International, about 40 km away, has very few routes, so almost any international trip turns into a KTX from Gwangju-Songjeong to Seoul (≈1h50) plus the transfer to Incheon — add half a day and ≈US$35 in train fare alone.
