It's an important rail and agricultural hub, the heart of the delta's cotton country, and home to Tanta University. Its religious fame comes from the shrine of Sayyid Ahmad al-Badawi, one of Egypt's great Sufi saints, whose moulid (festival) draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims each year. It's not a classic tourist destination but a real Egyptian city, dense and agricultural.
