Puerto Saíd
Aprox. 538,378 habitantesApprox. 538,378 people
Port Said sits at the Mediterranean entrance of the Suez Canal, in northeastern Egypt. Founded in the mid-19th century as the canal works began, it's a relatively young, cosmopolitan port city, with colonial architecture of wooden verandas quite unlike the rest of the country. It lives off maritime traffic, its commercial free zone and fishing. Across the canal is its twin, Port Fuad, reached by a free ferry.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Puerto Saíd?How much do you need per month in Puerto Saíd?
Port Said is a canal-and-beach Mediterranean city, not a nomad base: almost nobody comes here to work remotely and the infrastructure for it simply isn't there. It works if you want to live very cheaply on the Mediterranean, earn in dollars or euros, can handle daily life almost entirely in Arabic, and don't depend on heavy uploads or coworking. It doesn't work if you need a foreign community, guaranteed upload speeds, or price stability — Egypt is coming out of years of heavy devaluation and inflation that is only now easing.

Fixed-line internet is dominated by WE (Telecom Egypt); in town you get plans with tens of megabits down and fiber has reached several districts, but Egypt's chronic weak spot is UPLOAD — plans are heavily asymmetric and upstream stays low, so video calls are fine while pushing video or large files will hurt. Watch out for this: WhatsApp and FaceTime voice calls have been blocked or throttled in Egypt for years (Zoom, Meet and Teams generally work) and news sites are blocked, so nearly everyone runs a VPN — install it before you arrive. Mobile 4G in the city is solid and is your best plan B: buy a local SIM with your passport. Scheduled power cuts were a real problem through 2023–2024 and, although suspended, they can return during heat waves: don't live without a battery backup on your router.
CoworkingCoworking
Straight up: I'm not aware of any established coworking space in Port Said, and I won't invent names. Egypt's coworking market lives in Cairo and Alexandria, not here. What you get are cafés on the corniche and downtown where you can sit for hours over a cheap coffee, but café wifi in Egypt is usually weak and shared — the real play is working from home with your phone as backup hotspot. If coworking is non-negotiable, Port Said isn't your city: Cairo is about 200 km away (≈3 h by road) and Alexandria a bit further along the coast.
Al-Sharq is the historic district — the old wooden colonial buildings with balconies, the corniche, life on foot — and it's where you'd want to live as an outsider. Al-Manakh and Al-Arab are central residential districts, cheaper and more local. Al-Zohour is further out, newer and quieter, with bigger apartments for less money but more dependence on the microbus. Port Fuad, across the canal on the ferry (free, and a nice little ride), is the green, tree-lined side: good if you want calm, bad if you want everything at your doorstep. And be clear-eyed: Port Said's "foreign community" is basically maritime and port-sector people, not lifestyle expats.
ComunidadCommunity
There's no nomad community here. No remote-work meetups, no Spanish-speaking group, no English-language event circuit. What there is is a very sociable local culture: Egyptians make friends fast, you'll get invited for tea and into people's homes, and the corniche and the cafés are the city's meeting point. But daily life runs 100% in Egyptian Arabic; you'll find English among younger people, in the maritime sector and a bit in tourism — not with the greengrocer or your landlord. If you don't pick up some Arabic you'll be more isolated than you expect, and more so if you're a woman on your own.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres cosas serias. Three serious things. One: Egypt has no digital nomad visa — you arrive on a 30-day tourist visa (e-visa or on arrival depending on your passport; not every Latin American passport qualifies, check yours before booking) and extend at immigration. There's no legal category for living here while working remotely, so plan your exits and don't sign a year-long lease before you understand your immigration situation; also, if you're not staying in a hotel, Egypt requires you to register your arrival with the authorities within the first few days. Two: photographing the canal, the port, bridges or any military installation is prohibited, and in Port Said that's half the city — it can cost you your phone or a very unpleasant hour with the police; ask before you raise the camera. Three: the Egyptian pound was brutally devalued between 2022 and 2024 and inflation hit extreme levels; it's easing now but remains elevated and local prices keep resetting: your dollars go a very long way, and at the same time any figure you read from a year ago is already useless. Always change money at a bank or official bureau and carry cash, because the country is still very cash-based and ATM withdrawal limits are low. On top of that: in July and August the city fills with Egyptian holidaymakers and seasonal rents spike (get an annual contract, never a summer one), summers are humid and heavy while the Mediterranean winter is windy and wet, and street harassment of women is a real problem in Egypt, here included.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
