Cairo is a total assault: twenty million people, relentless horns, minarets, golden dust and the pyramids peeking out behind a McDonald's. Chaotic, loud and exhausting — tourist hassle is real, haggle everything — but with an intensity and history no other city matches. Not for the faint-hearted.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en El Cairo? How much do you need per month in El Cairo?
Cairo is one of the cheapest nomad bases in the world in dollar terms: around US$1,000 gets you a comfortable month, and no other cheap base gives you this much history and street-level life. It works if you're energized by chaos and want your money to stretch, and if your job tolerates good-but-not-perfect internet (VoIP calls over WhatsApp and FaceTime have been restricted in Egypt for years). It does not work if you need clean air, walkable streets and quiet — traffic, noise and pollution are part of the package, not a footnote.

Fiber is essentially WE (Telecom Egypt), which owns the fixed network: home plans range from a few dozen to a couple hundred Mbps for ≈US$10–25/month. Download speeds usually deliver; upload is noticeably weaker, which matters for video calls and large uploads. Two things to confirm before signing: Egyptian plans have traditionally come with a monthly data quota and throttling past it (read the fine print — this has been shifting), and VoIP calls over WhatsApp, Messenger and FaceTime have been blocked or degraded in Egypt for years; Zoom and Meet generally work, and most people cover the rest with a VPN. Mobile 4G covers Cairo well and is fast; 5G is limited. The grid ran scheduled blackouts through the summers of 2023 and 2024 that were later suspended — check where things stand the year you go, and consider a UPS for your router if your work can't take drops.
CoworkingCoworking
Un escritorio flexible mensual ronda ≈US$60–130. The scene is real and good value, though it's built more for Egyptian startups and freelancers than for passing nomads. AlMaqarr is one of the names that comes up most among remote workers, and The GrEEK Campus was for years the city's best-known tech hub (note: its premises have changed and been disputed, so confirm where it operates today before showing up). Beyond the named places, there are plenty of small spaces across Maadi, Zamalek and downtown, and many sell by the hour or the day as well as monthly — very common here. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$60–130. There's also a huge café culture: plenty of people work out of specialty coffee shops in Zamalek and Maadi, though the wifi is hit or miss and outlets are scarce.
Maadi is the default expat area: leafy, quieter, numbered streets, supermarkets with imported goods, international schools and a good share of the coworking spaces. Zamalek, the island in the Nile, is the pretty walkable neighborhood — cafés, galleries, restaurants; pricier, with gorgeous but unevenly maintained old buildings. Downtown is the cheapest and most alive: early-20th-century architecture, noise around the clock, ideal if you want to be in the heart of the city. New Cairo and Sheikh Zayed/6th of October are the modern suburbs: new apartments, cleaner air, everything convenient — but you need a car and you're far from anything interesting.
ComunidadCommunity
Meeting Egyptians is easy: people are open, curious and social to a degree that surprises newcomers, and the hospitality is genuine. The foreign community is large but skews long-term expat (NGOs, embassies, oil, teachers) rather than digital nomad; expat Facebook and WhatsApp groups for Maadi and Zamalek are still the most practical way in. There's little Spanish-speaking community: plan on living in English, which works fine in Maadi, Zamalek, coworkings and with young urban Egyptians, but not in day-to-day neighborhood life, with taxi drivers or with your building's doorman. Learning basic Egyptian Arabic and the numbers changes your experience — and your prices — completely.
Egypt has no digital nomad visa: you enter as a tourist, and depending on your passport that's either visa on arrival or an e-visa arranged before you fly — check your specific nationality with the Egyptian consular authorities, because the rules shift and several Latin American passports aren't on the visa-on-arrival list. Working remotely on a tourist visa is a gray area, as almost everywhere. The Egyptian pound devalued brutally between 2022 and 2024 and local inflation has been very high: your dollars go far, but pound prices move fast, so treat every figure here as an order of magnitude rather than a fixed price, and confirm it on arrival. Sign leases with that in mind — landlords commonly quote foreigners in dollars or euros, ask for several months upfront, and often skip a real contract. Air quality is among the world's worst and gets worse during the autumn "black cloud" from crop burning. Summers push past 38 °C and the nights don't cool off, and Ramadan reshuffles the city's entire schedule. Violent crime is not the concern, but street harassment of women is a real, well-documented problem, and haggling and tourist scams are a national sport around Giza and Khan el-Khalili: budget patience along with money.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
