Sylhet
Aprox. 237,000 habitantesApprox. 237,000 people
Sylhet is the gateway to Bangladesh's green northeast: tea country. The city spreads along the Surma River, and the surrounding hills are carpeted with the plantations that made the region famous. It's a deeply religious place —the shrine of Hazrat Shah Jalal anchors its identity— and tightly bound to the UK: much of Britain's Bangladeshi diaspora traces back to Sylhet, so remittance money is visible everywhere. The climate is wet and humid; this is one of the rainiest corners of the subcontinent.
Mejor épocaBest time
November to February, the cool dry season. Skip the monsoon (June–September): Sylhet gets heavy rain and the lowlands are prone to flooding.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Sylhet? How much do you need per month in Sylhet?
Sylhet is dirt cheap and green — tea gardens, hills, the most "London-flavored" city in Bangladesh thanks to the Sylheti diaspora in the UK — but it isn't a nomad base: there's no international remote-work scene, no visa that lets you legally stay for months, and the city is conservative and effectively dry (no alcohol). It works if you have Bengali roots, family there, an NGO project, or a lot of curiosity and tolerance for monsoon. If you want coworking, an international crowd, and simple paperwork, this isn't your city — look at Chiang Mai or Tbilisi.

Home fiber reaches most of the city and is absurdly cheap (≈US$8–14/month), with real-world speeds typically 10 to 30 Mbps; 50+ Mbps plans exist, but what you actually get depends heavily on your neighborhood ISP — usually a small outfit splitting bandwidth among the block. Fine for video calls; frustrating if you upload heavy files daily, since upstream is the weak half. Mobile 4G covers the city well (don't count on 5G) and will be your backup. The two real problems: load shedding still happens in summer and kills your router unless you have an IPS or battery, and Bangladesh has a track record of government-ordered internet shutdowns during political crises — it happened in July 2024, with both mobile and fixed lines down for days. If your job can't survive disappearing for 48 hours, weigh that risk seriously.
CoworkingCoworking
There's essentially no coworking scene. Bangladesh has a huge freelancer population — Sylhet included, with plenty of people working for foreign clients from home — and the government pushed IT parks in the region, but I'm not aware of any stable, named private coworking space where you can show up and pay a monthly fee like in Bangkok or Medellín. Realistically: you work from your flat and go out to downtown cafés (the Zindabazar area) for a few hours. If a space does exist, expect very low absolute prices — well under US$100 a month — but confirm on the ground and don't book anything from abroad.
Uposhohor (Shahjalal Upashahar) is the planned, better-off area: it's where British-diaspora families settle when they come back, with the newest houses and the widest streets. Zindabazar and Mirabazar are the commercial heart, where you'll find central flats plus restaurants and cafés on foot. Subid Bazar and Amberkhana sit along the airport corridor, more mixed and somewhat cheaper. One pricing quirk: remittance money means housing in Sylhet is expensive relative to local incomes, so don't expect the bargains you'd find in other Bangladeshi cities. And "foreigner" here mostly means British-Bangladeshi of Sylheti origin, not Western nomads.
ComunidadCommunity
Nómadas internacionales: cero, no cuentes con encontrar otro. Comunidad hispanohablante: inexistente. International nomads: zero — don't count on meeting another one. Spanish-speaking community: nonexistent. What does exist, and it's massive, is the UK connection — a huge share of people have family in London or Birmingham, come back on holidays, and speak English with a British accent — so if you're sociable you'll meet people fast that way, not through meetups. Hospitality is genuine and overwhelming: expect a dinner invitation to someone's home within days. The daily language is Sylheti, which is not the same as standard Bengali; English works with university-educated people, at private clinics, and with returnees, but not with your CNG driver or at the market. As a solo woman the experience is noticeably more restrictive than as a man.
Lo que nadie te diceWhat nobody tells you
Tres cosas duras. Three hard truths. One, the visa: Bangladesh has no digital nomad visa and the tourist visa is short; staying for months means extensions and real bureaucracy, so sort that out BEFORE you book the flight, not on arrival. Two, water: Sylhet sits next to one of the rainiest regions on Earth and it floods for real — the 2022 floods put much of the city and Sunamganj underwater, with repeats since. From May to September the rain rewrites your plans, and renting a ground-floor place in a low-lying area is a bad idea. Three, it's a conservative Muslim city and effectively dry: alcohol is nearly impossible to get legally, modest dress is expected (more so for women), and during Ramadan the whole city shifts its hours and rhythm. Add brutal heat and humidity from April to June, power cuts, and two money warnings: the taka has been losing ground against the dollar and food inflation is high, so these USD figures move — treat them as an order of magnitude, not a fixed budget. And while violent crime against foreigners isn't the issue, politics is: the country has stayed unsettled since the 2024 change of government, and a strike or road blockade can wipe out your week.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
