Daca

Aprox. 10,356,500 habitantesApprox. 10,356,500 people

Dhaka is intense: one of the densest cities on Earth, the world capital of the cycle-rickshaw and a traffic chaos that's part of the experience. Old Dhaka, on the Buriganga river, holds the history —mosques, Lalbagh Fort, the pink Ahsan Manzil palace— while newer zones like Gulshan are vertical and business-driven. It's not a city to relax in but one to dive into; it rewards patience and a stomach for the crowds.

Costo de vida nómadaNomad cost of living

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Daca? How much do you need per month in Daca?

Dhaka is one of the cheapest bases on earth and also one of the hardest: it works if your job brings you here (garment sourcing, NGOs, development) or if you genuinely want Bangladesh and can handle a megacity of 20-plus million with brutal traffic and worse air. It does not work as a lifestyle nomad base — the coworking scene is tiny, there's no digital nomad visa, the government has shut down the internet nationwide during political flare-ups, and winter brings some of the worst air quality on the planet. If you do come, the sane move is living in the Gulshan/Banani bubble, which costs more but buys you some calm.

Home fiber is among the cheapest anywhere: unlimited plans in the tens of megabits for ≈US$8-18 a month from local ISPs. The issue isn't the number on the plan, it's stability — it dips at peak hours, and power cuts (rarer than a few years ago but still real in summer) kill your router unless you have a UPS or battery backup, which nearly every household here has. Mobile 4G coverage across the city is good with the big carriers (Grameenphone, Robi, Banglalink), and a data-heavy SIM runs ≈US$5-10 a month; 5G is marginal, don't count on it. The big risk isn't technical: during political flare-ups the government has restricted or cut mobile and fixed internet nationwide, with entire days offline in 2024. If your income depends on being connected, have a real plan B (the ability to move city or country) and don't take critical deadlines without buffer.

CoworkingCoworking

It exists, but it's small and very concentrated: nearly everything is in Gulshan, Banani and a bit of Dhanmondi, tied to the local tech/startup ecosystem and to serviced-office providers for companies, not to a nomad scene. A monthly hot desk runs ≈US$50-120, with dedicated desks and private offices well above that; the supply turns over fast, so confirm a place is still open before you count on it. In practice most people work from home or from Gulshan/Banani cafés — good coffee, loud rooms, patchy wifi — and big hotel lobbies are the fallback when you need quiet and a video call that won't drop. Don't expect Bali- or Medellín-style coworking culture: here you work alone, and community comes from somewhere else.

Gulshan 1 and 2 is where almost every foreigner ends up: embassies, supermarkets with imported goods, restaurants, lakes and somewhat calmer streets. It's the priciest area and the one that most feels like you can live without fighting the city daily. Banani is right next door, younger, with more cafés and restaurants per block, and slightly cheaper. Baridhara (the diplomatic zone) is the quietest and greenest, but also the most expensive and the most socially isolated. Dhanmondi is the real-city option: Bangladeshi middle class, the lake, universities, good café life, clearly lower rents and a lot more chaos. Uttara, up north by the airport at the end of the metro line, is newer and more breathable, but leaves you far from everything else in a city where traffic is the main tax you pay. Note: Gulshan and Banani are NOT on the metro line, so living there means moving by car or rickshaw.

ComunidadCommunity

There is a foreign community, just not a nomad one: NGO and development people, diplomats, and above all garment-sourcing folks — many European brands run buying offices here, so you will find Spanish speakers, though it's a small and fairly closed circle. Almost none of it runs through public meetups: you meet people through work, through Gulshan clubs and gyms, and through someone already on the inside. Arrive without contacts and expect a lonely first few weeks. English works in Gulshan/Banani, with professionals and educated younger people, but on the street, with rickshaw drivers and in markets it's all Bangla — learning numbers, greetings and basic directions changes your daily life completely. Bangladeshis are genuinely hospitable, and an invitation to eat at someone's home comes sooner than you'd expect.

Air is issue number one: in winter (November to February) Dhaka repeatedly ranks among the world's worst cities for air quality, and if you have asthma or sensitive lungs this isn't negotiable — an air purifier at home and a mask outside are normal here, not paranoia. Traffic is the other tax: budget an hour or more to cross the city and build your life inside a walkable radius; the metro only helps if you live on its line, and the expat zone isn't on it. The monsoon (June to October) floods whole streets, and April to June is serious heat and humidity. Practically: there is no digital nomad visa — you'd enter on a tourist or business visa and extending is a bureaucratic slog, so confirm requirements with the consulate before booking. Landlords typically want several months' deposit up front in cash, on contracts that protect the tenant very little; get the rent and the term in writing. Treat the dollar figures on this page as orders of magnitude: the taka has devalued substantially in recent years and inflation shows up at the supermarket, so confirm prices once you land. Alcohol is restricted and expensive (licensed hotels and clubs, not supermarkets). And political instability here isn't theoretical: there have been strikes, large protests and internet blackouts in recent years, so keep the flexibility to leave and check your country's travel advisory before you go. Safety: violence against foreigners is rare, but bag and phone snatching on foot at night does happen; solo women frequently report street harassment, and dressing conservatively saves you a lot of friction.

Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
