It sits where the river Kennet meets the Thames, and that joining of waters shaped its history: it was a monastic town around the medieval Reading Abbey, then the biscuit capital thanks to the Huntley & Palmers factory, and today it's a tech and business hub on the M4 corridor. Outside the UK it's best known for the Reading Festival, one of the country's big rock music events each August.
