Plymouth
Aprox. 260,203 habitantesApprox. 260,203 people
Plymouth is a port city in Devon, southwest England, where the River Tamar marks the border with Cornwall. It's above all a city of the sea and naval history: Devonport, one of the Royal Navy's great bases, is here, and it's from here that the Pilgrim Fathers set sail for America in 1620. It was heavily bombed in World War II, so its center is postwar reconstruction, but it keeps gems like the old Barbican quarter, the seafront walk on the Hoe, and the converted former naval victualling yard at Royal William Yard.

It can rain any time, this is the English southwest.

¿Cuánto necesitas al mes en Plymouth? How much do you need per month in Plymouth?
Plymouth is one of the cheapest big cities in England: a naval port and university town on the Devon coast, with the sea, cliffs and Dartmoor 40 minutes away. It works if you want a cheap UK base, nature on your doorstep and don't mind grey skies; internet is decent and rent is well below London. It doesn't work if you fly often (no airport, London is ~3.5h by train), if you want a nomad scene — there basically isn't one — or if you expect the UK to let you stay: there's no digital nomad visa.

Fine, not spectacular. Much of the city has full fibre to the home, where you'll get 100-500 Mbps for ≈US$30-40 a month (gigabit exists, you rarely need it) with decent upload. The catch: plenty of Victorian terraced streets are still on fibre-to-the-cabinet with copper for the last stretch, which means ~40-70 Mbps down and 10-20 up — fine for video calls, not much more. Check the exact address on an availability checker before you sign a tenancy, not the city. Mobile 4G/5G is solid in town and data is cheap (≈US$15/month), but it drops off the moment you head up onto Dartmoor or down to the coastal coves. Power cuts aren't a thing here; café WiFi, on the other hand, is hit and miss.
CoworkingCoworking
Small scene, more local-entrepreneur than nomad. There are offices and studios in converted buildings — Royal William Yard, the old naval victualling yard on the water, holds a lot of the creative crowd, and Plymouth Science Park rents units on the north side near Derriford — but there's no big buzzing coworking full of people on 3am calls. Budget ≈US$150-200 a month for a hot desk if you find one; most people end up working from home and using cafés in the centre, the Barbican or Mutley. If your life depends on a coworking with an international crowd, this isn't your city.
Mutley and Greenbank — the student belt next to the university: cheapest, noisiest, and where most newly arrived outsiders land. Peverell and Mannamead — residential Victorian streets, quiet, families and professionals; the best value if you actually want to sleep. The Hoe, the Barbican and Stonehouse / Royal William Yard — the handsome waterfront strip, restaurants, the old harbour and converted naval buildings; priciest of the lot, though the back streets off Union Street drop off fast. Stoke and Devonport — cheap, right by the dockyard, lots of Navy families; quality varies a lot street by street.
ComunidadCommunity
Hard if you arrive alone and short-term. There's no nomad community: social life revolves around the university, the Navy and people who've been here their whole lives, and the groups are already formed. There are international students and a small Spanish-speaking community, mostly tied to the university and hospitality, but nothing like Bristol or London. Everything runs in English with a fairly thick West Country accent; without functional English you'll struggle. What does work for meeting people: sea swimming (Tinside and Devil's Point are near-religion), sailing, and hiking on Dartmoor. For actual surfing you have to drive to the south Devon coast or north Cornwall — the water off Plymouth itself is too sheltered.
Legal stuff first: the UK has no digital nomad visa. As a visitor you get up to 6 months, and the rules allow remote work for your overseas employer only if that isn't the purpose of the trip — it's not a basis for settling, and border officers can refuse entry if it looks like you're moving in. On top of that, landlords are legally required to check your immigration status (Right to Rent), and many will want a UK guarantor or several months upfront: renting without a long-term visa is a genuine headache. Council tax catches everyone out late — register with the council and claim the 25% single-person discount. On housing: a lot of poorly insulated Victorian stock, with winter damp and mould and heating bills that sting — view the place in person and be suspicious of freshly painted walls. On weather: mild but very exposed to the Atlantic, wetter and windier than eastern England (though Plymouth does well on sunshine hours), and in December it's dark by 4pm — the winter slump is real. The thing people most underestimate is connectivity: no airport (the city's closed years ago), ~3.5h by train to London, and the coastal line at Dawlish still shuts in bad storms, though less often since the sea wall was rebuilt. If you fly monthly, you'll get frustrated here. Safety-wise the city is calm by day; the issues are weekend nightlife around Union Street and a few areas with visible drug problems — nothing basic judgement won't handle.
Figures in US dollars and approximate, reviewed in September 2026, for one person. Rents move fast in nomad-heavy cities — use these to compare and budget, not as a quote.
